CHILD SAFETY - POTENTIAL LEGAL ACTION
In newsletters this term we have included a number of articles and a copy of our Child Safe policy. These reminders reflect the commitment of everyone at St Peter’s to the safety of children in our care. I provide the following information to ensure that we are all aware of possible outcomes of our actions in certain situations.
One challenge that can occur in schools is when an adult decides to speak to a student because they are not happy with something that student is saying or doing to their own child. Even though it may not be the intention to instil fear in the child this is very likely to be the outcome. I have received advice that scaring a child to a level where they are too frightened to come to school has legal implications for the adult which can result in Police intervention and possible charges.
If any parent has an issue with another student at St Peter’s their child’s classroom teacher is the first place to go. Where necessary the teacher will then follow this up with an appropriate member of leadership or myself. We all want our children to be, and to feel safe.
BEFORE SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS
In the last fortnight we have had a minor focus on students meeting all expectations regarding before school, and the end of recess and lunchtime lining up. This means that when the weather is appropriate children sit in their lines on each of these occasions talking only to the students around them ready to move into school when the bell goes. When the weather is not appropriate they are required to stand in line and follow the same process. It is a simple opportunity for students to show their ability to self discipline themselves to meet an expectation and to have them ready to move into school in an orderly fashion.
UNIFORM CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKYOU
Congratulations and thank you to the families who have ensured that their children are in the correct uniform. I wish to particularly acknowledge our Year 5 and 6 students who have been challenged to set an example for everyone else. It is wonderful to see students taking pride in their school’s uniform.

LIFE IS MORE THAN WORK
In one of her many articles Joan Chittister says, “If the question is, What is really important in life?—the answer is only life itself, living it well, immersing it in beauty, love, and reflection”.
When I was younger I bought myself an A4 diary which had a page for everyday of the year. If that didn’t make me feel important enough then I made sure the diary was filled with appointments, all day and every day.
When people asked me how I was I could truly answer BUSY! The dreadful buzz word which says something about you but allows you to hide behind much.
For a number of years I was busiest person alive and at the same time the crankiest, impatient and exhausted person alive.
I defined myself by how busy I was rather than who I was. Work was my life.
If people saw how busy I was then they would love and respect me.
How stupid I was!
Three years ago I somehow contracted Legionnaires Pneumonia. I was in hospital for two weeks including five days in intensive care. I lost 13 kilos in weight (I now which I could lose some weight!!!) and was not allowed out of hospital till I could walk by myself.
Having been a marathon runner I was amazed how quickly the body deteriorates.
It is often said that when something major happens in your life the way you look at life and live life after the episode can change.
I think this is true for me.
My work life now is only part of my life. It is not my life.
Dr Chris O’Brien, a Sydney surgeon who died from cancer over 10 years ago, said that his life as a surgeon was everything to him. “The people need me!” When he had to retire due to his illness it amazed him that he did not miss work at all. His whole focus in life changed.
I do believe if you can find the right work place environment I think you have won the pot of gold. For me, I think at present, I have won this pot of gold. My alarm clock buzzes at 6am and I get out of bed to begin the many morning rituals. I make a cup of coffee from my Nespresso machine and pour it into a keep cup and take it with me to my car around 6.45am. Start the car and turn the radio on to SEN and listen to Garry and Tim as I make the journey to either Bentleigh East, Moorabbin or Bentleigh arriving around 7.15am.
The mornings are a wonderful part of the day as I experience the various seasons of the Melbourne weather pattern. Now, fortunately, I am arriving at work in a little daylight. Soon I will experience the sun rising as I drive down Centre Rd. The people I mix with at the three schools are all focussed on the importance of learning and teaching. There is always a vibrant conversation happening in the staff room as everyone runs around trying to get done what they need to get done. The joy and enthusiasm from the students lifts my heart to realise that God is truly present in creation.
At the end of the school day I leave through the school gates very happily and leave it all behind.
In the past I would take work home. This would either be for correction or more often than not it would be the thoughts occurring in my head. I could never leave these thoughts at school. I never knew how to turn off. The thoughts would lead to crankiness, impatience, anger and exhaustion.
There is so much merit in the 8-8-8 day. How many of us live this way?
All of us at some stage in our life need to address where we are in our relationship with self, others and God.
I now know that at my funeral no one is going to say I was great because I had the biggest diary in the world which was also filled with so many appointments. He was so important because he was so busy. At the end of the day the diary is nothing.
But they will say what sort of person I was.
How loving was I?
How giving was I?
How generous was I?
How caring was I?
How humble was I?
How thoughtful was I?
“For when you did these things to others you did them to ME!”

Peer Support Program – Term 3
Last Friday the session focused on inclusive practice and developing empathy. Students thought about how they could make a positive change in their own lives. Parents might like to ask their child to think about a change they would like to make and the skills that will help them to make it. The Year 5 and 6 Peer Support Leaders have been doing an amazing job – they are all to be congratulated!

Well done to the St Peter's Athletics team that finished 3rd at the Bentleigh District Carnival last week. St Peter's were in a tight battle all day for top spot and were just edged out of the top two in the final races. The students are to be commended on their performance on the day, their dedication to training and the brilliant way they conducted themselves at the Carnival. Thank you to the teachers who assisted with training along with Mat Scalzi who provided fantastic coaching for our High Jumpers. Congratulations to the students who finished top 2 overall for their event which includes all heats combined for 100m and relays. On Monday the 5th of August, the Year 6’s went on an excursion to the city. We all got dropped off at Bentleigh Station and then we caught the 9:30am train straight to Flinders Street Station. While one group explored and took part in activities at Federation Square, the others headed straight to ‘The Big Issue Classroom.’ We learned about the marginalised groups of people in today's society and the struggles they face day to day. Then we spent the rest of our day exploring ChinaTown, the Block Arcade and the Gravity Alleyway. Soon after, we caught the train back home. It was a great day and we all learnt a lot and had so much fun!

ST. PETER'S FOODBANK
Thank you to all the volunteers that have cooked for us in the past few weeks.
St. Peter’s Primary School Food Bank was established in 2013 with families volunteering to cook meals for other families in the school community during a time of need. Whether there is illness, hospitalisation of a family member, bereavement, the arrival of a new baby, moving house or even if someone is in need of a little extra TLC, the Food Bank can help.
We would like to invite parents to consider becoming one of our volunteer cooks. We anticipate each volunteer would only be required to cook 2-3 times per year. Of course, you are welcome to cook more often if you like.
We also encourage you to think about your friends and classmates at the school and keep the Food Bank in mind if they are going through a tough time. It is a completely confidential service and you can access it through us or through a staff member at St. Peter’s. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, please download our electronic brochure below.
We are looking for some new parents to sign up as volunteers to start cooking for our Food Bank. We love to have as many volunteers in our Food Bank pool as possible.
If you have not cooked for our Food Bank before, please ensure you email us prior to cooking, at sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au, and ask us for a Food Bank information pack.
If you become aware of someone in the school community needing a little help or TLC, please contact us. You can contact us confidentially at: sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au or call Karina Clement 0404 057 522 or Katrina Chapman 0488 386 088 (Program Co-ordinators) or your class teacher, school office or Michael Hanney directly.
