- COMMUNITY NEWS
Father's Day can hold many emotions for both men and women - those who had a loving father that passed away, those who never knew their dad, those expectantly waiting to become a dad soon, and countless other situations surrounding the father-child relationship.
God can use this special day to draw us closer to Himself - the one true Father who remains faithful and full of unconditonal love. As we move from celebrating Father’s day yesterday do not forget the power of prayer as we pray to our Father for all fathers. Keep them in your prayers constantly.
DAD’S FOOTBALL
Congratulations to our dads for putting up a good fight in their game against St Pauls’ dads on Saturday. Despite our best efforts we did not come away victorious. However it was a wonderful community event enjoyed by all who attended.
A huge thankyou to all the dads for participating and for the huge amount of work that goes into preparing for this event. I encourage the dads to keep their eyes out for the next dad’s event.
FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST AND STALL
On behalf of the dads and our children a massive thankyou to our Parents and Friends for organising last week’s Father’s Day Breakfast and Stall. Breakfast was a wonderful celebration and the amount of planning and work required is huge. I would like to also thank Justin McCarthy for all his work in helping with the organisation and the staff who arrived bright and early to assist with parking and supervision duties.
This was then followed with a very successful Father’s Day Stall on Friday. I know our students enjoyed shopping for dad and I hope our dads enjoyed receiving their gifts.
5 KMS SPEED LIMIT ON FRONT CAR PARK
The speed limit on the front car park off Centre Road is 5 kmh, slower than walking speed. This applies at all times in this car park, pick up and drop off from school, OSHC, Fedpas, Basketball training or while visiting school at any time. Keeping our children safe must always be the number one priority.

Book Fair
We held a very successful book fair during BOOK WEEK in Week 7. As a result of your support of this initiative, the commission we made was $2652.30. Karen Young and her band of volunteer staff members enthusiastically encouraged our young readers to select appropriate choices to purchase. Karen is now busily selecting new books for our library and we are all most grateful to have this money to spend. Watch out for all the new additions on our library shelves.
Book Week Activities
Although we only have a Book Parade every second year, we do celebrate Book Week each year by reading some of the Children’s Book Council Australia short-listed books and doing activities in our classes. On Friday 25th August, we had some very impressive guest readers visit our classes to read one of these short-listed books. The children loved the engaging way that these guest readers presented the stories to them. A huge thank you to those readers who supported us.
YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO SCIENCEWORKS & PLANETARIUM
Lightning Room by Ollie
The scariest but most fun place at Scienceworks was the Lightning Room! It was so good, a man named Doug told us all about lightning and how it was made. A boy named Michael from my calls got to help Doug making cool cloud in a bottle. Near the end of the time Doug showed us how to make a rainbow. At the end Doug’s assistant Dee turned the tesla coil on and told us what would survive a lighting strike. For example, a car would survive a lighting strike.
General Viewing Room by Gemma C
I completely loved the General Viewing room. It was the most exciting place. You could see things you would not see every day, even C-P30! A lot of people lined up to race Cathy Freeman and a lot of people wanted to try boogie boarding in the snow as well. There was a game where you had to get a car, truck, bus or any vehicle to a certain destination.
Lightning Room by Hugo P
The Lightning Room was so cool! I loved seeing the lightning bolts hitting the guy with the golf club. We had to cover our ears but some people did not and it was really loud!
Planetarium by Marley
The planetarium was the best part of our excursion because there was a huge screen on the roof and we got to watch a movie. The movie was called Tycho goes to Mars. I felt like we were in the movie and it was incredible. We also got to learn about the night sky. We learnt that there are different constellations and one of them is the line constellation. It was sooo fun!!!
Planetarium by Eddie
The planetarium was by far the best thing at Scienceworks. We got to lay on these really comfortable chairs and relax. We watched a movie called Tycho goes to Mars. It was about a dog who gets a new play house that turns into a rocketship and flies him to Mars. It was so good! At the end we got to see the beautiful night sky of Melbourne and learn about the stars.
Planetarium by Ethan
On 31st August, the Year 2 students went to Scienceworks. The best bit was the Planetarium because we got to lay back and watch the world’s best movie Tycho goes to Mars. It was about a dog going to Mars and finding water on Mars to fuel up his rocket. At the end they showed a light show, and also told us if we were lost in the night to look up and find the cross. Count four bumps ahead and then you will be pointing to the south.
Lightning Room by Eve
The Lightning Room was the best because the guy that was talking to us was really funny. We had to block our ears at one point and watched the lightning go across an aeroplane, a car, a guy waiting for the bus, a guy under a tree and a guy with a golf club in his hand. It was satisfying but there was more to it. He got people to do stuff with funky hair and put balloons in their hair. That’s all for it for the Lightning Room.
BENTLEIGH DISTRICT ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On the 31 of August St Peter’s and 6 other schools competed in the Bentleigh District Athletics Carnival at Duncan MacKinnon Athletics Stadium. Everyone competed in different field and track events such as discus, shot put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, sprints, long distance running (400m, 800m 1500), relay and golden baton. All students did very well in their events.
The last events of the day were relays - Macy C won the girls race by a tenth of a second!! It was a photo finish, no one knew who had come first. However when the team heard Macy had won they were very excited!!
In the golden baton relay- 4 Year 6s Jake R, Nic S, Sid N, Macy C - all ran well and came third after almost chasing the other schools down!
Over all St Peter's came 4th out of all the schools.
A big thanks to Mr Cav, Mr Porter, Mr Hurst, Ross, Miss Bryan, Sarah, Mr Mac and Mr Hanney for the support and organisation of the day.

Saver Plus is a free matched savings and financial education program that matches participants’ savings, dollar for dollar, up to $500, for education costs such as uniforms, books, excursions, sports fees and laptops.
Over 55,000 participants have benefitted from Saver Plus and it would be great to chat with you about how we can work together to inform the families at your school about the benefits of this program.
With the increasing cost of living impacting so many Australian families, helping to ease the financial strain for low-income earners where able, is important to our team at Berry Street. The advice provided through our Money Minded program is intended to not only assist families to achieve their saving goal of $500, but to develop lifelong financial skills and habits as well as build their financial confidence.
About Saver Plus
Saver Plus was developed by Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ in 2003 and is now delivered nationally through Berry Street and The Smith Family. The program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and ANZ.
Participants set a savings goal for education costs, make regular deposits into a savings account over 10 months, and attend financial skills workshops. At the end of the program their savings are matched by ANZ, dollar for dollar, up to $500, to be used for education costs such as uniforms, books, excursions, sports fees, and laptops.
Participants are also supported over the 10 months by one of our dedicated Savings Coaches who will stay connected with the participant to guide them through the program.
Parents are eligible to join Saver Plus if they meet all the following the criteria:
- be over 18 years old.
- have a Centrelink Health Care or Pensioner Concession card.
- be in receipt of an eligible Commonwealth social security benefit, allowance or payment.
- have some regular income from work (themselves or their partner) including casual, part-time, full-time or seasonal employment; and
- have a child enrolled at school (or enrolled to start school) or attend vocational education themselves.
