WELCOME BACK
Congratulations to all the Collingwood and Brisbane Lions supporters on an amazing Grand Final. I am sure the Collingwood supporters are still celebrating and haven’t yet come down to earth. Condolences to the Brisbane supporters.
We welcome everyone back to school after what I hope has been an enjoyable break during the September school holidays. The sunshine and warm weather certainly made for some beautiful days and I hope your children got outside and enjoyed the fresh air.
I am very pleased to advise you that Cate Sanders, our Creative Arts teacher, has returned after two terms of personal leave. It is great to have Cate back in the Art room. We are grateful to Michelle Cincotta who taught Creative Arts during Cate’s absence.

This Thursday throughout the world we celebrate World Teachers’ Day, although in Australia it's celebrated on October 27th as often it falls during our school holidays.
World Teachers’ Day 2023 is a day of recognition and appreciation for teachers around the world. It was established by the United Nations as a day to celebrate the profound impact teachers have on society by equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and values needed for success. This day also serves as a reminder of the importance of quality education and the role of teachers in achieving it.
All children have a right to an education. But millions of children miss out on school every year.
Without an education, children's employment and livelihoods remain limited, with significant socio-economic and health impacts.
One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure that every child completes primary and secondary school by 2030. This requires 69 million teachers worldwide!
Over the past decade, significant gains have been made in improving child and adult literacy rates. But poverty, conflict, gender inequality and COVID-19 threaten to wipe out years of progress.
The UN has identified that:
“Lack of training, unattractive working conditions and inadequate funding all undermine the teaching profession and aggravate the global learning crisis. UNESCO has always placed teachers at the heart of the fight for the right to inclusive and quality education. There is an urgent need to better recognise this profession on which the future of our children depends.”
Audrey Azoulay
UNESCO’s Director-General
Caritas has identified education as one of the global issues it focuses its efforts on. This is why St Peter's continues to support the work of Caritas through Project Compassion and other fundraising endeavours, such as the Long Walk to Water our Year 5 students participated in last term highlighting the struggles many children throughout the world have accessing education, when most of their day is spent walking to collect fresh water for their community.
Why are children missing out on education?
Poverty and education are connected in a vicious cycle. When you’re living in poverty, it is difficult to afford an education. Without an education, it is hard to earn sufficient income to lift yourself out of poverty. This cycle can continue for generations.
Families living in poverty face a tough choice between their short-term, immediate needs and the long-term benefits of education. Disadvantaged households often do not have sufficient resources to pay for essentials such as school uniforms, stationery or transportation.
When we tackle poverty in disadvantaged communities, we improve the likelihood of children finishing school. Something as basic as supporting a community to build a well can have flow-on effects for children’s education. A community with improved access to safe water means children will spend less time walking to collect water for their families and more time in the classroom.
Education is the circuit breaker that can end the cycle of intergenerational poverty. When you empower a person with education, you equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to fulfil their potential. They can improve their employment prospects, earn more income and, most importantly, lift themselves and their family out of poverty.

MATHS GAME DAY @ GENAZZANO COLLEGE
On the 8th of September 2023, 8 students from St Peter's Primary School went to Genazzano FCJ College to take part in an annual games day competition, to compete with the best mathematicians across local schools across Victoria. The 6 students from Year 6 were Amelia Webb, Stella Bateman, Mia Briffa, Alana Diamantaras, Alivia Wijaya and Nicholas Swart. The 2 students from Year 5 were Mary Goes and Xander Engelbrecht.
We started off the day with a Welcome to Country by the Maths Principal. Then tested our brains with problem solving. We got handed a small book by our amazing table monitor Imogen McGee as she explained the rules. It was a bit challenging but we all got through it. We had almost an hour to complete a series of worded questions, each being worth 3 points if you got it right first go, 2 points if you got it right second go and 1 point if you got it right on the final go.
One of the challenges we did was problem solving games against students from other schools. Alana, Amelia, Mia and Stella were a team, on table 31 and Nic, Alivia, Mary and Xander were in the other group. Some examples of the games that we played were Honeycomb, First to Five and Extend-a-line. We would switch opposition teams after every game we played. In the end we didn’t end up in the top ten, but we all had a lot of fun competing in the Games day along the way.
We thank all the work the teachers and LSOs put in to get us there and make us have a red hot go! We thank Ms Epstein for giving us the opportunity to compete in this fun and amazing day, and we are glad that we had the chance to go and put our learning to the test!

FOOTY COLOURS DAY - PREMIERSHIP CUP
Monday, 11th September was Footy Colours Day and we got to touch the AFL and AFLW Preimiership Cups!
The lovely Jo from the AFL came to show and talk about the Premiership Cups. The cups are special because not everyone gets to win a Grand Final and very few people get to hold the Premiership cups, but we are one of the few schools who got to see and hold them.
Jo explained to us that the cups are worth $20,000 each and take 10 months to make. We would really like to thank Mr Cav for organising a great morning for all of the St Peter's students and a big thank you to Jo from the AFL for bringing the cups in.

WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY - KIDS CANCER PROJECT
On the 14th of September a group of ten Year Sixes called ‘Write-atouille’ wrote an amazing book called Qestameleon.
This incredible book was about a young girl who sets off on a quest to find a special ruby, but on the way she faces a challenge having to choose between her trusty companion or the most expensive ruby the world has ever seen.
This story was written for kids in hospital to read while getting through their cancer treatment and donations were so generously given to raise money for a kids cancer cure.
On behalf of the “Write-atouille’ team we would like to thank Mrs McKee, Sarah, all of the generous donaters and of course the wonderful Laura who organised all the Monday writing groups and was there with us on our special day.
