CONGRATULATIONS DREW LANE
A huge congratulations to the students who were amazing in last week’s school musical “Westall 66” - The Musical. It was a credit to their hard work and talent. Drew Lane, our Performing Arts teacher wrote and directed this production as well as putting in many hours completing sets and organising the huge team of support staff.
I also want to acknowledge Amy Williams' work as assistant director. She has been a great asset and support. A school musical is just a wonderful idea if you don’t have the amazing support that over forty staff provided. It was a great team effort to bring the work of a creative star to fruition so that our students could shine, and boy did they shine!
PRINCIPAL ON LEAVE
I am taking a short break and am on leave this week, returning to school Wednesday the 8th of November. Chris Joplin will be Acting Principal during my absence.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month is a moment not only to pause and remember all those who have served and sacrificed in wars and conflicts across the world, but also to reflect on the historical events that led to this day of significance.
Originally announced to mark the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I, Remembrance Day today gives us all the opportunity to acknowledge the service personnel who died while serving in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
From today leading up to the 11th November we will be selling merchandise for our local RSL. Poppies and other items will be available for $2, $4, $5 & $10.

YEAR 5 EXCURSION TO SCIENCEWORKS & PLANETARIUM
On Tuesday the 17th of October the Year 5’s went on an excursion to Scienceworks. It was a long drive into Scienceworks and the bus ride was loud with happy and very excited students.
Our first activity started at 10:30am. We went to the Planetarium.
The Planetarium is a place with a giant dome screen above these awesome chairs that can lean back. The presenter showed us a little film on the dome screen about planets. It told us about what planet was closest to the sun and more about the different moons! Once the film finished the presenter talked about the stars and showed us all the different constellations.
It was time to eat! I rushed over to the large baskets full of drink bottles and lunch boxes and found mine in the big pile. We sat on these rainbow stairs and munched on some food. Once finished, we had some time on the playground.
Then we made our way to the most amazing part. We explored the Think Ahead and Sportsworks area. In the Sportsworks area you could measure, challenge your skills, judge sports and explore all the sporting equipment!
Then there was this other game where the buttons lit up and we had to push them! There was a Kathy Freeman activity where you could race against Kathy Freeman. It was a very popular activity.
I went to the Think Ahead area next.
I rushed over to build your future car. There were these really funny bubble cars! Then you could have these funny looking kangaroo shoes on your car! And you could have flying wheels and everything! I pressed the button on the screen and I could see my car up on the big screen above. It was awesome!
One of my favourite parts about this area was the teleporter! You go in and people spin you and you head out the other side and then you have…VANISHED!! It was so fun! There was also this cool emotion sound room. There was this big screen in the middle and you can make your own music! Scary, sad, calm, happy or excited. Then it was time for lunch.
After lunch we all went into the Energy Lab to see the “Cool stuff” science show presented by Nina. She used liquid nitrogen in her science experiments and together we made predictions and explored the results. For the final experiment she placed a rubber duck toy called “Bob” into liquid nitrogen and we observed what happened once she hit it with a hammer. Sadly the rubber duck turned to a solid and smashed into lots of pieces.
I love scienceworks!

On Tuesday 17th of October all of the Year 5’s went on an excursion to Scienceworks. We arrived at 10:15am and our first activity was the Planetarium. In the Planetarium there was a big globe around us on the roof as we laid down on the leaning chairs. We looked up in the sky watching the Solar System Odyssey and Secrets of the sky. They showed us the constellations in the night sky. Once we finished that activity we went outside to eat our snack and fruit, after that we went to the playground to have a little break.
We then explored the General Viewing area and saw the Think Ahead and Sportworks exhibitions. A highlight from the Sportworks exhibition was racing against Kathy Freeman.
There was also this one upper body strength pulling test and I pulled 80kg! I was really happy with the score I got and one of the Year 5 teachers, Miss Uehara, pulled 90kg! I was shocked that she got such a high score. There was a really fun sound room where we could make sounds (scary or calm). After all that fun we all calmed down and had lunch on the rainbow staircase and everyone was so excited to find out what the next activity was.
As we waited in a line to go to the next activity we finally went in to find out that we could watch a slideshow of experiments. The presenter, Nina, used liquid nitrogen on all of the experiments, like mixing dish soap and water and the liquid nitrogen together and it made the bubbles turn into ice! She also used a rubber duck toy, which we named Bob. She placed the rubber duck toy into the liquid nitrogen and then smashed it with a hammer. When we finished that last activity we sadly had to go back to school because it was nearly time to go home. We really enjoyed that trip and hope we will go back another time.

Tuesday the 17th of October the entire Year Five level from St Peter's traveled to Spotswood to visit Scienceworks. Buzzing with excitement the eager Year Fives rushed through to their first stop, the Planetarium. Each student and staff member had their own chair which reclined backwards so you could view the screen above. The room turned dark and the big dome lit up with the night sky. The students had watched a Solar Space Odyssey and the night sky which went on for forty minutes. The Planetarium was enjoyed by lots of the students and staff but they had to move onto the next stop.
St Peter's had a quick snack break then continued to the next section, General Viewing. The General Viewing was split into two sections called SportsWorks and Think Ahead. SportsWorks was a fan favourite of many with activities such as racing against Cathy Freeman (which plenty of people false started), wheelchair racing, seeing how high you could jump, measuring your height, testing your strength, testing your flexibility, judging gymnastic performances, shooting a netball and more.
The second section in general viewing was Think Ahead. This area had activities such as designing your own car, designing a farm, catching rubbish, futuristic harp, creating your futuristic self, and lifting cans of drinks which weighed the same as they would on each planet in the Solar System.
After an hour of the General Viewing it was time to move onto something new, Cool Stuff. Cool Stuff was a science room that had experiments happening. Each student and staff member had a seat and then the experiments began. Nina was the lady who ran Cool Stuff, she made experiments using liquid nitrogen, water, warm water and dish soap. She did experiments that made things explode but the last experiment was devastating for some children. Nina had brought out a rubber duck (Bob), dipped it in liquid nitrogen then it turned from a rubbery material to a rock hard material and then she smashed it. That was the last activity of the day which led to the students and staff heading back to school. Students and staff all had a great day visiting ScienceWorks!

On the 17th of October the Year Fives of St. Peter's went to Scienceworks in Melbourne. This excursion was part of the Year Fives Inquiry unit learning about Space, the Solar System and of course Science. This excursion included the Planetarium, General Viewing and the Energy Lab. Each of these activities and events were equally fun and interesting.
The inside of the Planetarium is like a giant dome that acts as a large movie screen, which is used to project images and movies. The Year Fives watched a journey through space and looked at some interesting star constellations that you may be able to see in the sky, on a clear night.
After a quick snack the students headed to General Viewing, which is an area in two sections, Think Ahead and Sportworks. Sportworks was where students got to experiment with different aspects of their body. There was a soccer simulation, different steps to being an athlete and racing Cathy Freeman. Think Ahead was all about the future and environment. Some activities were water rerouting and building a futurist car.
Next was the Energy Lab, where they looked at different states of matter and a (trained) adult used Liquid Nitrogen (N₂O) to freeze items and to blow up a balloon (From the Outside). Liquid nitrogen freezes the object almost immediately.
At the end of the excursion the Year Fives left Scienceworks with a lot more knowledge and intelligence.

FOUNDATION TO YEAR 2 SWIMMING PROGRAM
We went to GESAC to learn how to swim and be safe in the water. We went for eight days. We did all kinds of swimming, for example, backstroke, soldier kick, bubble, bubble breath, freestyle and torpedo. We also played some games like ‘pulling you in’, and ‘sinks and dives’. These games were awesome, and we had the time of our lives.
The last day was the most ‘watertastic’ day. We played sport in the water, a floaty and sinky challenge, and best of all was the water slide.
By Romie Clarke 2GPOn my first day of swimming I was so excited! On the way I was thinking how fun it would be. When we got in it was steamy and smelt like chlorine. I was in team blue.
A few days later I was getting into it. On the last day it was ‘fun day’ and I was in team Pink. We played dodgeball and went on the water slide. We did all of this at GESAC and we loved it.
