YEAR FOUR CAMP THANKYOU
Our Year four classes had a very enjoyable camp last Thursday and Friday. The weather was perfect and the students were able to experience a number of outdoor activities and challenges. I thank Mr Cavarra for organising and leading the camp. I also thank Catherine Basquill, Silvana Merola, Josie Gleeson, Mandi Mackey, Mimi Hunter, Gill Sullivan, Jim Kendall and Louise Van Corler for taking time away from their own families to ensure that our students had this opportunity.
The staff who attended were also very grateful to the Class Reps and the Parents and Friends for organising a meal that they could take home on Friday when they got back from camp.

MANGO FUNDRAISER PROFITS
As a result of the Mango Fundraiser $1485 has been set aside to add to the resources within the Coding and Robotics part of IT lessons at St Peter’s. Full details of the purchases and other IT updates will be shared in the next newsletter.
HOUSE ATHLETIC SPORTS
A reminder that this Friday, 17th November, is the St Peter's House Sports to be held at Centenary Park. Students will participate in a variety of Athletic events and games commencing from 9:10am - 11:30am. The whole school will attend at the same time.
All students are asked to wear their Sport Uniform with a t-shirt or polo top in their house colour. They should have sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and a water bottle. Students will have their snack and lunch at school as normal with slightly adjusted recess times.
Parents are welcome to attend what promises to be an enjoyable day although we would ask for safety reasons that you stay outside of the fence when following groups around.
WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY
Congratulations to our Write A Book In A Day (WABIAD) team who raised over $2,000 for research into children’s cancer as part of their WABAID experience.
The announcements of the National and State winners took place last week and although our team were not prize winners they are winners in our eyes for a great team effort.
Congratulations to Aislinn Scahill, Jack Cannington, Sid Noble, Holly Pelc, Kye Konstandinou, Olivia Gorski, Jewel Roby, Katya Greco, Alice Bottomley and Alivia Wijaya. Thanks also to Laura Jemetta who volunteered to assist in the preparation and on the day and to Kerry McKee and Karen Young who also spent the day providing support.
STUDENT SUCCESS
Congratulations to Ethan Hendrie (5AC) who recently participated in the Ethan Singa Soccer Cup in Singapore.
It was a great experience, with matches played against Malaysian, Singaporean, Indonesian, and Filipino teams. Unfortunately Ethan’s team fell just short of qualification into the final. They did however give a very good account of themselves. The conditions were extremely challenging (32 degrees & 70% humidity), as were the opponents.
Well done Ethan!

Oasis camp is an amazing camp. There is a fantastic variety of fun activities as well as very kind staff and delicious food. The activities vary from being on a zipline or hitting a bullseye in archery to even customising your own candle or holding a snake in the reptile house.
When schools go to camp Oasis they most likely always have a brilliant time with guaranteed fun and excitement.
The staff are very kind and they will most likely always thoroughly demonstrate how to stay safe, enjoy and complete the activities. The food was phenomenal and the staff are very cautious about some of the children who have allergies. There is a beautiful and natural atmosphere around the camp which is filled with many chirping birds and if you are lucky you might see some other wildlife such as wombats and kangaroos. The area is surrounded by many gum trees where the kookaburras live. There are also many flowers and bushes surrounding the area. The cabins are spacious and can vary from four, eight or twelve people per cabin to suit everyone.
“I would highly recommend Oasis Camp Mt Evelyn for anyone who enjoys camping as it is such a beautiful place bursting with colour and fun.”
“I think everyone should try it and they’ll really love it.”
“It is a great destination for people’s first time camping.”
By Savvas Batzaxis and Lachlan Webb 4MM
I thought camp was a great experience for those people who have never been away from their parents for very long. Although it was only 1 night, it was one of the best nights. When we were there we did multiple activities. We were split into groups with random people and everyone was hopeful we would make some new friends. (Most people did!) It was a great opportunity for us kids to show how responsible we are to organise everything in our cabins and get to places on time. Every time we had a little bit of time to gather all the things we needed before heading to the activities. All the groups did all the activities but at a different time and in a different order.
One of the activities we did was Archery. Most people were mystified on how to hold the bow, how to aim, how to place the arrow in the bow correctly and how to shoot the arrow, when others knew exactly how to do it and they were awesome. Lots of people ended up being really good after practising, but still, lots of people's arrows ended up very far away!
Another one we did was Candle making. That taught us how to be patient while we waited for the candle to take shape. You had the option to make a straight candle or a shape candle and either one you chose, the string had to be at the top. You would keep dipping and dipping the candle into the different coloured wax. (If you forget to dip it in the water before wiping it, it would really hurt because you would burn your hands!)
Most people loved the Flying Fox. When it was your turn you got the awesome opportunity to feel what feels like flying through the air! Although it might have been scary at first, after you did it a couple of times it felt amazing and made you feel happier than ever! When you were about to reach the end, there was a position called ‘potato’. It was sort of like you curled up in a ball. If you didn’t hold that position at the end you would end up as a mashed potato! And that hurt. A lot! Some people were even brave enough to go upside down!
An extremely hard one we did was crate climbing! It was a bunch of crates with holes where you placed your feet while in mid air trying to balance on top of the crates! It is way harder than it looks. Some people were so good at it that they were able to do the highest you could go! 13 crates and standing up on top! I think only 1 or 2 people actually did that though. There was a person on the side holding you up and if they let go, I reckon you would have fallen! There was another person on the other side passing you the crates. Those are the people you swap with after you have your turn.
A really fun activity was the Reptile House! It was full of amazing reptiles such as all types of lizards, giant snakes, tiny frogs and a turtle! Most of the groups only got to see/hold a few but some of the groups were lucky enough to hold/see them all or at least one of every type!
For the meals, we got served with all sorts of things such as tacos, pizza, eggs on hash browns and cereal. We had tacos for dinner and we could choose what we wanted in them. We could choose sour cream, lettuce, cheese and many more! For dessert after dinner (tacos) we got mini tubs of ice cream with the choice of smarties on top!
After dinner on Thursday, we split into classes and 2 of the classes went on the night walk while the others did a talent show. If people were doing a talent for the talent show that was in the other group they would just come to our group so they didn't miss out on anything or do something twice. There were heaps of amazing acts in the talent show so it was hard for Mr Hanney to choose a winner! The winner got $5 worth of stuff from the canteen! Everyone wanted to win so badly but there could only be one winner. When Mr Hanney chose the winner it was James Bottomley! While all this was happening, others were still on the night walk. When they were walking on the gravel paths they were listening to the wonderful sound of the trees swaying in the air and the birds chirping in the trees.
The cabins had different types of beds and a mix of people. They had 1 shower and 1 toilet so everyone had to take turns and some people had so many people in their cabins that they didn’t even get a chance to shower.
By the end of the day everyone was exhausted and looking forward to the activities that they had not completed the next day.

Year 4 camp was a great way for us kids to experience a bit of independence in such a short period of time. It gave us a taste of what it will be like as we get older and start having more responsibilities, but we still had a boat load of fun along the way. I thought it was great that we had to organise ourselves and our cabins to get to places on time, like at meal times.
We were split into groups that we would do our activities in. The activities we did were archery, crate climbing, seeing reptiles (lizards, snakes and turtles), going zip lining on a flying fox and making our own candles with a piece of string and wax. Each activity taught us different things. Candle making taught us patience, seeing the reptiles showed us how to be calm and quiet, going on the zipline taught us bravery, archery taught us precision and accuracy and the crate climbing showed us that we are a lot better at stuff then we think we are. It was a whole 2 days of fun, but we also learnt stuff at the same time.
During candle making, we had to continuously dip a string into hot wax (make sure to not burn yourself), and then dip it into cold water to make the wax harden. It felt like I was doing it over and over again forever. In crate climbing, you had a partner who passed crates up to you to put in a stack and you had to see how many crates you could climb. It is actually a lot harder than it looks, but there is a harness you need to wear, so it's completely safe. We also went to a reptile house where we got to see snakes, turtles and lizards. We had to be quiet there so we didn't scare away the animals though. Some brave people chose to hold the lizards, and some people even held the snake! We did archery, where we took turns shooting arrows at the target. We had to wear protective gear like goggles and wrist pads just in case you accidentally got hit by an arrow. And the last activity we did was zip lining on a flying fox. They connected you with a harness to a rope and you jumped off and enjoyed the ride. Just a few of the most courageous people went on the zipline upside down.
The food there was delicious and I don’t think anyone didn’t come for seconds. One the first night, we had fish tacos and the salsa was delicious. For breakfast the next day, we had a choice of eggs, hashbrown, toast and cereal, but I think everyone had a hashbrown. For lunch, we had pizza (and everyone likes pizza). We had a choice of margherita or pepperoni. All of the food they had there was amazing.
We went on a night walk, where we took some time to think about what we were grateful for and reflected on who had made our day and if we had made anyone else feel happy. The scenery was beautiful as it was just us and the trees and nature. We watched the sunset just ahead of the hills and it felt like we were near the peak of the mountain. It was supposed to be a night walk, but it was still so bright and we did not need our torches.
This year, St Peters tried something new this year and I think it worked out really well. Over the past 2 weeks, some kids have been practising a routine to show in front of everyone, and we held a talent show to see who has the best talent. Some people did songs and dances, lots of people did stand up comedy and some people did gymnastics. It was very interesting because it shows you a whole other side to someone you have never seen before. The kids anonymously voted for the act they thought was best and the teachers counted the scores. The winner gets a prize of $5.00 of money to spend at the canteen for free! The winner was James Bottomley from 4MH who sang a song to win the competition.
The cabins were well kept, though the beds were not in perfect condition. There was only 1 shower in the cabins but that enabled more privacy for people. There were bunk beds that didn't take up too much space, so there was more space for other stuff like bags. Lights out were at 10:00pm, and I think that was fair. It was a bit hard to fall asleep as the bedsheets were a bit rough.
Overall, I think the Year 4 camp was a great way to introduce independence but at the same time have a lot of fun. I would highly recommend Oasis Camp as it guarantees a great experience for everyone!!
By Noah Bui 4MH
On Thursday to Friday all the Year 4’s went to Oasis Camp.
The staff members at the camp were really nice and helpful. Surprisingly I had the best sleep ever. The rooms were cosy and spacious. (Also cleaner than we thought). The food, Oh My GOSH. It was SO delicious and extravagant. Much better than I expected.
The activities were really fun. We got to do crate climbing, flying fox, reptile house, candle making, initiative games and archery.
But out of all those activities my favourite was the crate climbing because it was fun, but challenging and pushed me to the limit.
Flying fox was really cool, it felt like you were flying in the air. Some people thought it was easy, some people got a fright.
The reptile house was fun, but a GROSS feeling when holding the reptiles. We got to feel reptiles, Sushi - a black headed snake and Squirt - a NINJA TURTLE. When I held Sushi it was absolutely DISGUSTING. (It made me squeamish).
We didn’t do many initiative games (meaning games using a team). But we did some using the park near the oval.
Candle making was really fun and everyone had a cool and different design. Mine came out REALLY well.
Archery was unexpected because we didn’t really know if we were doing it or not. It wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be.
The nightwalk was calming and peaceful, but the night shows were strong and entertaining.
And for the parents, trust me it’s worth the money and please don’t make your kids do so much after camp. They're going to be SO tired.
The whole camp was really fun and for the Year 3’s get ready to do it next!!

Our first camp at Oasis camp was amazing!
We went on Thursday and came home on Friday. While we were there, we did a collection of fun and amazing activities such as the Flying Fox, Reptile House, Crate Climb, Candle Making and Archery.
The Flying Fox: My favourite activity was the Flying Fox, at first I was quite afraid when I was up there, but I breathed in and out and jumped off the ledge and I had a great time. My stomach clenched, but with the excitement and fun I couldn’t feel squeamish anymore. It felt amazing. I LOVED IT!
The Crate Climb: It was another one that I was a bit unsure about, but with the help of my partner, I got up to nine crates! On the ninth one it started to wobble then I kicked it over and it Crashed onto the ground!
The Reptile House: I loved the Reptile House, it was full of different reptiles (such as lizards and snakes) and amphibians (such as frogs). We got to hold some of them such as Lenny and Gloria. After we got to hold the super long black headed python called Sushi. I know a cute name for a deadly snake which could kill and devour you. He weighed 5kg and is about 2 metres long. It took 3 people to hold him! He felt rubbery and bony at the same time.
Candle Making: We did Candle making on Friday, you dip the wick in the wax for 2 seconds then dip it in the water for 2 seconds, we repeated the steps and then it was finished. Mine was a bit of a wonky line, but it still looked cool.
Archery: This may sound bad but I didn’t like archery a lot. I know you’re probably thinking it was because I was bad at it but no, I just found it boring.
Cabins: I had 9 people in my cabin and we had 10 bunk beds, but boy the beds and mattresses were hard.
Other stuff: There was a Talent Show at about 6:00-6:30pm. We had it just before the night walk and after dinner. The night walk was a peaceful and calm walk that took around 20 minutes. I saw a kookaburra up close. It was so amazing! I felt the fresh breeze brush against me and I thought there was nothing like that.
Dinner: We had dinner at around 5:30pm, we had TACOS! Sooooo yummy… It makes my mouth water when talking about it.
Oasis camp was an amazing place and lower grades, when you get to Year 4 you’ll have an amazing camp experience. I wish we could go there again!!

STUDENT WELLBEING - STAR AWARDS / BUCKET FILLER / WALK/RIDE TO SCHOOL DAYS
READINESS PROGRAM
Year 1-6 continue to cover a variety of topics during their Readiness Wellbeing lessons. Below you will find tips on the topic of Trust.
LEVEL 1 & 2
Some ideas as a family you can try to further reinforce trust are below:
● Follow through with promises. Set the stage for trust by following through when you say you will do something.
● Only make promises you can keep. Breaking a promise you made to your child will harm their trust.
● Be honest. Of course, the way you answer questions should be age appropriate, but don’t lie to your child.
● Get in the habit of not using white lies with your children. This helps children match verbal and nonverbal communication, reducing confusion.
● Parents will make mistakes. Being open about our shortcomings, fears, and struggles helps our children trust that doing so is safe to do.
LEVEL 3 & 4
Some ideas as a family you can try to further reinforce trustworthiness are below:
● Eye contact - people learn a lot about a person’s intention by focusing on their eyes. When speaking to a child, get down and gently look into his or her eyes. Let your child see what sincerity looks like.
● Give responsibilities - a clear and easy way to develop trustworthiness and responsibility in your children is to give them age-appropriate responsibilities or tasks that you keep them accountable for. It might be a chore or two, or making their bed, picking up their toys, etc.
● Follow through with promises - set the stage for trust by following through when you say you will do something.
LEVEL 5 & 6
Some ideas as a family you can try to further reinforce trust are below:
● Actions: referring to people following through on their promises, for example from the video a character trait mentioned was being dependable. This ensures your child can depend on you and what you say you will do. This sets a positive track record for trust.
● Body Language and expression: refers to the way someone holds their body or their facial expressions whilst they interact with you. For instance, someone who isn’t trustworthy won’t make much eye contact with you. Ensure your body language matches your words in a positive way. Point out examples so your child will recognise untrustworthy body language.
● Tone and delivery: referring to what people say to you and how they say it. For example, someone who is trustworthy will talk in a steady and calm way towards you, and someone who is dishonest may be erratic, talking fast or stuttering their words. Help your child recognise how to tell the difference.

Our next Walk/Ride To School Day will be on Friday, 24th November
In the meantime keep Active by Walking, Riding or Scootering to school whenever you can!!
Don't forget to have your cards clipped whenever you walk, ride or scooter to school and return your completed cards to the office to receive a new one.
The day started off hot, hearts pounding, anxiety racing through the bases. We won our Beachside Division. We were in the top eight in Melbourne! 2 of our star players Allegra and Alice were away, we were down 2!
First we versed Derinya Primary. Derinya was hard to beat, but we tried our hardest. Sweat running down our foreheads. We lost.
Next we played Beaconsfield Primary. Again we tried our hardest but we lost that game too.
Our AMAZING coaches Ms Cahill and Ross gave us tips and we were ready to play our next and final game playing Southmoor. With tips in our head we were ready to play against Southmoor knowing it was our last game EVER playing with: Sunday and Sienna. We started off strong, stronger than our last two games but unfortunately lost AGAIN!!
Thanks to our amazing pitchers: Alexia I, Sophia B, Katelynn, Sienna and Lily B, plus our spectacular backstops: Isabelle, Arianna, Tilly, Sunday and Sienna again. And obviously the rest of our team too and those members that sadly couldn't make it.

RUGBY LEAGUE FLAG TAG GALA DAY
On Thursday, 9th of November 2023 the Year Fives that were selected for the Rugby Tag Gala Day went to Centenary Park to play 6 other schools.
The six teams that we versed were Murrumbeena, St Paul’s, Oakleigh Grammar, Oakleigh South and St Andrews.
Both teams played well with the girls drawing one game, losing one and winning four!
The boys drew three games, lost one and won two.
The boys did a really good job in this tournament and the girls came second out of the seven teams!

STATES
On the 1st of November was my big day, because I was competing in long jump for the State Championship at Albert Park.
Once I arrived there were tons of people spectating. I was really nervous but I knew I was going to be OK.
I was stretching in the practice area until my event was called. I walked over to the gazebo where the instructors were calling our names.
Next we went over to the long jump pit. I got really nervous when we were walking over to it.
I put my mark on the line for where I was going to start my run up. I did my first jump and I was happy with it because I did a longer jump than the others. After all of the jumps, the instructor called out the places and I came third!
I went over with the other winners to the podium. I was announced on the speakers and got my medal.
My family and I took photos and at the end of the day. Everyone was super happy and I was very happy with myself.
