HAPPY FATHER’s DAY
I hope all dads had a wonderful day yesterday. Thank you to our Parents and Friends for organising the Father’s Day Stall last Friday. Lots of work to give our students the chance to buy something cool for Father’s Day. Thank you to Angie Leontaritis and Mel De Lucafor organising and to all the parents who assisted on the day. The following prayer was in our Parish Bulletin over the weekend.
We bring our dad to you,
O God, in prayer.
May the worries of his heart be eased.
May his work be meaningful and give him joy.
May his dad jokes be met with laughter
and the love of his family
be available to him.
May his support of his family
be met with appreciation,
gratitude and respect.
May he grow old surrounded by love.
And may he know that
as much as he loves his children,
he too is loved!!
Amen
ESMART WEEK - Information from Chris Joplin ICT Leader
This week is National eSmart Week which runs from the 1st-7th of September. National eSmart week aims to create an Australia that is free from cyber bullying, with digital citizens who know how to embrace the best technology can offer whilst being smart, safe and responsible online.
At St. Peter’s we will be running cyber safety lessons this week as well as promoting being cyber smart to students across all year levels.
This would be a great time to chat about cyber safety with your children at home. For more information on cyber safety you can visit these websites:
- The Office of eSafety website - https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents

FLORENCE STREET DROP OFF / PICK UP - Parking Inspectors and Police
Pick up time at Florence street continues to provide challenges. I have been contacted by a number of parents asking me to do something about the double parking, parents leaving cars, cars parked too close to the crossing and cars doing u turns in front of the no u turn sign. Unfortunately my authority does not extend to parking or driving matters. I know that the local council and local police will be monitoring Florence Street and imposing fines for parking or driving infractions.
I do understand the frustrations. Particularly for families who live on the school side of Centre Road. A number of children in Year 3 and above have organised themselves to walk together from and to Centenary Park with families dropping off and picking up from there or at points in between. These students are well prepared by their families with the support of the school programs we run on stranger danger and safety and remain together. With nicer weather approaching this is an alternative that families may want to consider.
My greatest fear is that a child will be injured in what can sometimes be chaotic times straight after school. If children are injured as a result of illegal driving or parking I don’t think it can be called an accident.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS NEXT WEEK
Parent Teacher interviews will take place on Tuesday, 10th September. Students will be dismissed at 1:00pm and are required to be picked up at this time. OSHClub will be available from 1:00pm. A letter with all details has been emailed to families today. Bookings open at 6:00pm tomorrow, 3rd September. These interviews are optional. If you have had a recent meeting or Program Support meeting for your child you do not have to make a parent interview meeting time. The choice is yours.
END OF TERM / BEGINNING OF TERM
The last day of school for Term Three will be Friday, 20th September with students dismissed at 2:30pm. OSHC club will be available from 2:30pm. Term 4 commences on Monday, 7th October.
CEMSIS
Last week you received a letter detailing a new survey we are using to gather data to continue to improve St Peter’s. Later this week we will send a letter to randomly selected families with a Pin Number. If you are one of the families to receive a letter I ask that you take the time to complete the survey. It is not a difficult survey and will have benefits for all our students.
All data gathered will assist us in guiding St Peter's improvement plans. There is a short video about CEMSIS via the link below if you want more information.

CONGRATULATIONS DADS
Congratulations to all our Dads who competed in the annual Dad’s Football game on Saturday. A particular acknowledgement of Danny Maher (Riley 6SF) for initiating and continuing to organise this great day four years ago. It continues to build communities together and was enjoyed by many families. A full match report can be found below.
Battle of the Saints 2019
On Saturday the 31st August, after months of training every Sunday afternoon, the Dads of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s played their 4th Annual Battle of the Saints’ Football Game. The game was played at Centenary Park in very windy conditions but that did not stop the demonstration of skills that even Bruce McAvaney would describe as “special”. The game was played in good spirits and both the players and the large crowd enjoyed the whole experience. It was awesome to see the families of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s get together for such a wonderful community event.
When the final siren blew it was St. Peter’s who won the game with a score of 12.13. (85) to St. Paul’s 6.8. (44) This makes it three wins in a row for St. Peter’s after St. Paul’s won the first game.
This game doesn’t just happen and I would like to thank several people for their outstanding contributions to helping make the day run so smoothly. I would like to acknowledge the following people for their help and I apologise if I miss anyone. Chris Mathews for coaching on the day, Bryce Deledio our inspirational Captain. Mick Lance and Peter Andrinopoulos for being runners. Campbell James for an outstanding job umpiring with the assistance of Harrison Baum and Samuel Cross both running the boundary and Ash Fenton behind the goals. Anthony Lance from Southern Suburbs Physio for strapping and being our trainer. Vicki Durston and all the wonderful volunteers at St. Peter’s Junior Football Club. Lou and Steve James for the lollies and oranges, Phil Odlum for designing the logo, Rachel Matthews for an amazing banner for the players to run through and last but definitely not least Michael Hanney for giving the St. Peter’s Dads a very inspirational pre game address.
The Dad's Football Game is a fantastic community event and allows dads from the school to get to know each other and make great networks.
Well done to all the Dads who represented St. Peter’s. You made us all proud!
Danny Maher

YEAR 3 IN SCHOOL ACTIVITY
Room on our Rock
Year 3 In School Activity - Thursday 15/8/2019
On the 15th of August , Meerkat Productions came to show us a play all about the book "Room on our Rock" by Kate and Jol Temple. Firstly, the characters introduced themselves as Sally the Seal, Sergio the Seal, Percy the Seagull and Stacey the Starfish. Sally had a rock as she was the leader, but she was scared to swim. Then, Sergio announced that he was holding a slow-motion swimming contest and took 4 volunteers from the crowd and whoosh! The race was on as the contestants went their way through swimming. Xavier Brodrick had won first and got to play the role of Boris, the baby seal. Sally was trying to help Stacey find a dressmaker for the Red Carpet Run of the Year but it would take 2 days and in 2 days, the show would be on. Suddenly, a thunderstorm hit and Sergio and Boris needed to find another rock. Then they found a rock with another seal. That seal was Sally, but she didn't let them on the rock. Sally immediately knew something was wrong and Sergio asked again. This time, Sally let Sergio and Boris on the rock. Then, they made Sally overcome her fear of swimming and taught her to finally swim. The lessons were:
- There are 2 sides to every story.
- Always include people who are feeling left out.
- To make people feel happy when they are alone or sad.
- To be a good friend and be helpful always.
St Peter’s Year 3 and Prep students went to an incursion about Room on our Rock. Room on our Rock was written by Kate & Jol Temple, illustrated by Terri Rose Baynton. The key themes of this book were empathy, sharing and immigration. The characters from the book “Room on our Rock” were named Sally the Seal, Percy the Seagull, Sergio the Seal and Boris the Seal.

This helped students to understand that the whole school needs to work together to build positive behaviours and to help those who are not experiencing good friendship. There are only a few more Peer Support sessions to go for 2019. In Week 10 (Friday 20th September) we will be celebrating the end of Peer Support with some fun classroom activities. We will also be showing our support for R U OK? Day on this day by wearing something yellow to school – a ribbon, a scarf, a pair of socks.

ST. PETER'S FOODBANK
Thank you to all the volunteers that have cooked for us in the past few weeks.
St. Peter’s Primary School Food Bank was established in 2013 with families volunteering to cook meals for other families in the school community during a time of need. Whether there is illness, hospitalisation of a family member, bereavement, the arrival of a new baby, moving house or even if someone is in need of a little extra TLC, the Food Bank can help.
We would like to invite parents to consider becoming one of our volunteer cooks. We anticipate each volunteer would only be required to cook 2-3 times per year. Of course, you are welcome to cook more often if you like.
We also encourage you to think about your friends and classmates at the school and keep the Food Bank in mind if they are going through a tough time. It is a completely confidential service and you can access it through us or through a staff member at St. Peter’s. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, please download our electronic brochure below.
We are looking for some new parents to sign up as volunteers to start cooking for our Food Bank. We love to have as many volunteers in our Food Bank pool as possible.
If you have not cooked for our Food Bank before, please ensure you email us prior to cooking, at sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au, and ask us for a Food Bank information pack.
If you become aware of someone in the school community needing a little help or TLC, please contact us. You can contact us confidentially at: sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au or call Karina Clement 0404 057 522 or Katrina Chapman 0488 386 088 (Program Co-ordinators) or your class teacher, school office or Michael Hanney directly.
