ACTING PRINCIPAL WELCOME
Dear St. Peter’s Parents and Guardians,
I hope you’re all well. Michael Hanney has now commenced his well deserved Long Service Leave. Hopefully the weather stays great just like today and his golf game improves over the 5 weeks. If there’s anything that you need to discuss during Michael’s absence I’m more than happy to answer any questions.
Staff
This week we welcome Sharna Hodges to the St. Peter’s staff. Sharna will be working as a Learning Support Officer in Year 6.
Confirmation
Congratulations to our Year 6 students who completed the Sacrament of Confirmation yesterday at our St. Peter’s Church. Both ceremonies were wonderful and our students should be very proud of how they represented themselves and St. Peter’s.
I’d also like to acknowledge our Year 6 teachers, Michelle GIbson and Trish Ticca for the time and organisation that went into Confirmation.
Lastly we thank you, the families of the Year 6 students for guiding your children along the path of the sacraments.
Parking Safety
If for some reason you enter the St. Peter’s Staff car park you will see that there are 2 areas that have been highlighted with yellow paint as ‘No Parking’ areas. We ask that you please adhere to these instructions. These spots have been highlighted as areas of safety for pedestrians so please do not park in these spots. Parking in this car park is for St. Peter’s staff between 8:30am and 3:45pm.
INCREASE IN COVID-19 ACTIVITY - HEALTH WARNING
Date issued: 10 May 2024
Issued by: Dr Clare Looker, Chief Health Officer
Issued to: Health services, health professionals and the Victorian community
Key messages
- Victoria is currently experiencing increased COVID-19 activity in the community, resulting in an increase in people being hospitalised with COVID-19.
- At the same time, we are seeing increasing cases of influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as we head into winter.
- During this time, it is especially important those at greatest risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses are protected – this includes people aged 65 and above, people with a disability or chronic medical condition and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Younger children aged 6 months to 5 years and pregnant women are also at greater risk of influenza and RSV.
These six steps can help you stay ahead of COVID-19:
- Wear a mask: a high-quality and well-fitted mask can protect you and others from the virus.
- Get vaccinated: stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccine. There are new monovalent vaccines available that are highly effective at preventing severe disease. You should get a booster if you are over 75 and haven't had one for 6 months. Other groups are also recommended to get a booster. Vaccines are available at your GP or local pharmacy.
- Let fresh air in: open windows and doors when you can – it reduces the spread of the virus. Meet outside when possible.
- Get tested: if you have symptoms, take a rapid antigen test. If you test positive and are eligible for antivirals, take them as soon as possible.
- Stay at home if you are unwell: if you have COVID-19, you should stay at home for at least five days and until you have no symptoms. Speak to your GP if symptoms worsen.
- Take antivirals if eligible: if you are at risk of falling very sick, you may be eligible for COVID-19 antiviral medicines. You must take these within 5 days of developing symptoms - the sooner the better. See your GP for more information.
At school we will be utilising all air filters and where appropriate keeping doors open for fresh air. If your child is experiencing any COVID like symptoms you are asked to give them a COVID test and if positive to stay home for five consecutive days.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
On Wednesday, 22nd of May, it was National Simultaneous Storytime for our entire country. At 12:00pm all grades from Year Prep to Year 2 read the exact same book.
This book is always chosen by the Government and is always a lovely book. The Book was called Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. Aura was born in Sydney and is an award-winner author.
Our class, 6SH, was assigned each to a Foundation, Year 1 or Year 2 class with a partner. We had to prepare to read the book and explain the activity. We had practised for 2 days prior to the event.
The children listened carefully to the book and were quiet and interested. They all performed the activities really well. None of this could have been done without Mrs McKee and Mr Hanrahan, so a big thanks to them for helping us all out.

YEAR 4 WILDLIFE EXPOSURE IN SCHOOL ACTIVITY
On Tuesday, 14th May we had an Incursion about animals.
The person who brought the animals and controlled the Incursion, was called Zane.
The first animal's name was Treko the stick insect and it felt like a blob on your head if you were picked for him to be on your head.
The next animal he brought out in my opinion was the cutest animal called the Gliding Squirrel she is called Launa. She got to go on our arms, if you were lucky she jumped off me like I was a tree. It felt like it was a spike but soft and Launa was really kind.
The third animal was the Barn Owl. The barn owl is called the barn owl because it usually lives in a barn so it can feast on mice. Its face looks like a love heart and it has beady black eyes so the owl can stun the mice because of the fright it gets from the black eyes. It is really soft but could scratch your hand badly.
The fourth animal was the Tree Frog. This frog is nocturnal and it only eats insects, snakes and small bats. The tree frog comes in colours of green, blue and grey.
The fifth animal was Timmy the Turtle. He is a long neck turtle saved from the Murray River and feels like he is 40 but he was only 2 years old! Timmy was kind and didn't bite. The turtle was quite cool because it looked old but it was only 2 years old.
The sixth animal was the lizard. Its skin was made out of the thing that nails are made out of so he doesn't get sun burnt when doing long trips over the big Australian desert, but their skin is a lot more bumpy than fingernails.
The seventh animal was the snake. It felt slimy and Rodion was insanely scared of the snake. It was scary when people held it because it was 2 metres at the age of 8. It was terrifying when it started to rap around Zane. It was huge!!
The final animal he showed was the big Apex Predator, the king of the swamp, the… crocodile. It was only 5 years old and it was huge. Its mouth had to be taped shut or else someone might have lost an arm. The crocodile was going to be a handbag but because it wasn't the greeny brown colour they wanted, the croc got rescued by Zane. The croc was a beautiful yellow and beige colour.

As I step into the room I'm in shock as I see 3 big boxes and wonder what's in them. Snakes. We sit down as our instructor Zane takes us through some rules as we eagerly wait to see the animals.
Firstly we saw a primary animal. As he gets it everyone is leaning towards him to get a sneak peak. It was a leaf insect! Its name was Treako and after we took a look at his cool unique shape he asked for some volunteers. Everyone's hands shot up as Zane felt a little overwhelmed as he picked 3 volunteers from our class. He put Treako on each of the volunteers heads and they said it felt weird. We were curious to see what was next.
Then he got a little cage out and when he opened it it was……a Gliding Squirrel. Her name was Luana and she looked so soft! Then he chose a few people to hold her and on the last person it glided off his shoulder into the little cage.
Then we backed away as he opened the cage. He slowly took it out and it was an owl with a fierce appearance. He brought it around as everyone backed away. Then he brought some people up to stroke him on the back.
After that he was getting the big box out. We were frightened. But it was just a tiny little tree frog. Few. He took the little blue frog around and then he chose me to come up. I was so excited and also a bit nervous. He put the little blue tree frog on my hand and it felt like a blob of slime on your hand but it gripped to it. It was also ticklish and really wet. Next he took out a cute long neck turtle named Timmy. He walked around letting us touch his wrinkly legs and hard shell.
After he got out a scaly and slimy lizard with a long tongue. He came around and let us touch it and I was scared at first then I was fine.
Next he opened the next biggest box and out came a giant snake. The people he chose were tempted at first but then decided to give it a go and they said it was heavy. The biggest and most secure box started moving as he took it out everyone shuffled back as it was a crocodile. Everyone got to touch its tail and it felt spiky and smooth at the same time, sort of like a guitar pick.
When he told us it was the end we felt glum because we had so much fun and now it had to stop but we hoped he would come back.

On Tuesday 14/5/24 4OG and 4MM went on an incursion about animals. It was at St Peter's Primary School in 5AC. We did it to learn about animals focussing on habitats, survival, migration, classification, description, food and reproduction. We met a man called Zane who showed us animals like Saltwater croc, Green tree frog, Squirrel Glider, Barn owl, python, turtle, a stick insect and a lizard. We observed, we listened and we touched / held. By being allowed to hold the animals we were able to learn about their unique features. The best thing about the incursion was that I got to hold a frog. It was as slimy as a slug. What I found interesting was that they build turtle crossings on roads. They build turtle crossings so that turtles can cross the road. Some questions that I would like to know are: 1. How much can a snake eat in a day? 2.Can the stick insect change colours? Which is the strongest animal out of the all? By Harrison Dunbar 4MM |
On Tuesday the 14th May a Wildlife Incursion came to our school. They brought different types of animals, including: a stick insect, frogs, an owl, snake, crocodile and many more. We could pat them and hold them. My favourite was the crocodile because it had sharp teeth. I learnt that when the owl flies it is very quiet and the possum can jump a long way! I had a great time patting and holding the animals. By Stephen Chatzikyriazis 4MM |
On Tuesday the Year 4s had an incursion with wildlife. In the incursion we got to see many different animals like: LUNA - Luna is a squirrel glider and she was so cute! When the man was talking about how she lives, Luna peed on him and everyone laughed! Luna lives in the woodlands and eats bugs. GEOFF- Geoff is a cool stick insect and lives in trees and eats eucalyptus leaves. When Geoff was on Maya’s head he was dancing like crazy! LINDA - Linda is amazing, she is an owl. Linda has very soft feathers and was very sensitive and alert. Linda lives in woodlands and eats rodents and also Linda is nocturnal. BLUE - Blue is a Blue Treefrog. Blue eats small bugs. Blue lives in the rainforest. Blue has an amazing trick; he can dissolve water and then shoots it out of his scales. TIMMY - Timmy is a salt water turtle. Timmy eats algae and seaweed and he lives in the ocean. Timmy can do a really cool trick but flipping himself over. LIZZY - Lizzy is a lizard. Lizzy eats meat and plant based food. Lizzy lives in the forest and scrublands. BROWNIE - Brownie is a snake. Brownie eats mice and rats. Brownie lives in dry areas of Australia. Brownie was funny because he kept escaping from the box. BLONDIE - Blondie is a white crocodile. Blondie eats fish and small frogs. Blondie lives in the water. I really loved our incursion! By Kiara Nichols 4MM |
On Tuesday the 14th of May the Year 4 were bursting with excitement for the Wildlife Incursion we were going to attend. When we entered the classroom it was filled with boxes and cages. I was curious about what was inside the cages and boxes. Our instructor's name was Zane. He spoke to us about the animals and rules which were: don’t scare the animals, if you don’t like the animal step away and a few more rules. I learnt about primary consumers, secondary consumers and tertiary consumers. Primary consumers are animals that are herbivores that eat plants to get their energy. Secondary consumers are animals that eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are animals that eat other types of animals. I enjoyed seeing the animals at the incursion. My favourite animal was the Tree Frog. I liked it because it is an underwater creature and how it jumps and slides on the leaves and water. I also enjoyed learning about the different types of animals. By Anaya Tisseverasinghe
