KIDS RESILIENCE CONFERENCE - Cybersafety
On Saturday, 7th September I joined nine teachers from St Peter’s, who gave up a day of their weekend, to learn more about building student resilience. I came away with a number of ideas and learnings. One of the significant learnings for me was the impact of social media on children’s resilience and wellbeing and the role of parents in controlling children’s access to social media.
- If any one in their thirties or forties wants to be a friend with a primary school student it is considered very creepy. Yet in our society we have parents of this age who want to be friends with their own children and do not want to upset their children or damage the friendship by doing what good parents should do.
- I learnt that the majority of social media platforms are not designed for children under thirteen. This covers all students at St Peter’s. Prominent ones include
- Instagram is 13+
- SnapChat is 18+
- Tik Tok (which was formally Musical.ly) is 16+
- Discord 13+
- Youtube account (not viewing) 13+
This link provides many more
If a student at St Peter’s has a social media account then one of two things has happened.
- The child has opened such an account without their parents knowledge, this is a concern but can be addressed by parents asking their children, checking all devices and removing access to these apps and staying on top of it. If children continue to use these platforms then remove the devices from their use. Your child may be upset and that is okay.
- Another more concerning possibility is that the student has these accounts with their parents blessing. They approve of their child lying about their age and misrepresenting themselves on an official document. Why would parents do this?
- Another learning came in the area of sexting. More than 90% of inappropriate photos taken and posted by students are taken in the bedroom or bathroom. For this reason, if no other, internet capable devices should never be with children in bathrooms or bedrooms.
Being a parent is the most rewarding and sometimes most challenging aspect of our lives. I do not share this information to be critical but because I believe it is a huge challenge that we need to stay on top of.

Year Six Presentations
Last week I visited our Year Six classes as they presented an expo on all they had learnt in studying a Diverse and Connected world. It was wonderful to see students working as teams sharing their understanding and learning. Congratulations to everyone involved.
FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST
Thank you to the Parents and Friends team and parent volunteers who ensured that our Father’s day breakfast was a great success. A fantastic team effort to ensure our dads were spoiled again! I wish to particularly acknowledge Sally Maher and Kate Smith who co-ordinated this breakfast in their last year as parents at St Peter’s. Thank you so much.
The winner will receive:

END OF TERM THREE / RETURN FOR TERM FOUR
The last day of term three is Friday, 20th September. Students will be dismissed at 2:30pm. OSHClub will be available from 2:30pm. The front parking area will be open at 2:10pm.
We return to school on Monday, 7th October at the normal starting time. My message to students on the last day of this term is stay safe and look to entertain yourselves. When it is good weather get outside and do something. Holidays are not a cruise ship and parents are not entertainment directors.
CEMSIS SURVEYS
Every year at around this time staff, students and 25% of our families are surveyed as a key part of our review and planning process. The families are selected randomly with every fifth family being sent a link to complete this survey. The normal completion rate across schools in Catholic education Melbourne is approximately 25%. At St Peter’s we obviously have higher standards than the normal. If your family did receive a survey link please complete this survey by this Friday, 20th September.
SAD FAREWELL
Farewelling families who are moving from East Bentleigh and consequently moving schools is always a sad time for our community. At the end of this term we farewell two families and four students. We thank Xavier Brasacchio (3WG) and his parents Francy and Joe for their contribution to our St Peter’s community. We also thank Noah (PNG), Joshua (3LK) and Sam (6SF) and their parents Karina and Alastair for all they have brought to St Peter's. We particularly thank Karina for all her work in being one of the two co-ordinators of the Food Bank. We will miss all of you and wish you all the best in your moves.
SUNGLASSES / HATS
Under our Sunsmart Policy sunglasses and hats are compulsory for all outdoor play or sport during Term Four. Please make sure your children have named hats and named sunglasses on the first day of Term Four.
MELBOURNE WRITERS' FESTIVAL
Monday, 2nd of September was no ordinary day for some of the Year Six students. We journeyed into the heart of the bustling city of Melbourne, to experience two inspiring authors and an illustrator, who expressed their advice for writers and shared their set-backs in writing, persistence and life experiences with us.
Andrew Daddo (Author), Stephen Michael King (Illustrator) and Oliver Phommavanh (Author) were all different people, but they had one thing in common; they were all motivational and we all took something away from the event. We established that you have to be a reader to be a writer, and if you ever find yourself stuck behind a writer’s block, you can always move on to the next chapter.
We stretched our legs at the park, had something to eat, and at the end of the day, we all piled onto the bus, feeling tired, yet satisfied.
We would like to thank all the fabulous teachers who came along: Mrs Kelly, Miss Dabb, Miss Fitzpatrick, but the biggest thank you of all goes to Mrs McKee, who made this day possible.

On Monday night we had a Prep Concert. There was smoke coming out of the side. We were excited and happy, nervous and confident. There was 104 people. The speakers stepped up to the microphone and I was smashing it!!

On Friday the 6th of September, 8 Year 6 students represented St Peter’s in the annual Maths Games Day held at Genazzano College. There were 48 different schools there from all across Melbourne! Some of the most academic schools were there so there was a lot of tough competition!
They had 3 sessions of Maths: Problem Solving, Strategy Games and Physical Maths Games!
Congratulations to the following students who were outstanding representatives of St Peter’s School.
Annabelle Chapman, Sasha Hannan, Charlotte King, Ava Flavian, Alex Tanti, Maddi Campbell, Karla Martinz, and Alexander Calvi. What an amazing group!
9 + 2 - 5 x 50 + 32% - 7 = A FUN AND AMAZING DAY
On Friday the 6th of September 8 students were chosen to participate in the Australian Maths Games Day located at Genazzano College.
The games day involved 36 schools from across Melbourne. When we arrived we were asked to split into 2 teams and think of team names. Madie C, Karla M, Sasha H and Alex C were in a team called “The Magnificent Multiplying Mathletes”. And Charlotte K, Ava F, Alex T and Annabelle C were in a team called “The PI-thons”.
The day consisted of three rounds Problem Solving, Strategy Games and Puzzles. The questions were extremely hard but both teams worked well together and managed to get most of them right.
By the end of the day our brains were exhausted but we couldn’t wait to find out the scores. We didn’t come out on top but we had an amazing time and it was a great experience! A big thankyou to Mrs Mackey for organising the day and for Mr Joplin for taking us.

YEAR 1 EXCURSION TO WHITEHORSE CENTRE & SCHWERKOLT COTTAGE
Here comes the whimsical adventure. First we went to the fantastic show. It was mesmerising. The dancers are nimble and amazing. Click, click went Mrs. O'Brien and 1CO went to the cottage. In the olden days the oldest had to empty the wee and poo. The youngest had to bath the last. Off we went to the Mulla Mulla Creek and last we went to the Museum. I had fun.

4KD WARRAWEE VISITS
Last week we had our last session of Warrawee. We had so much fun during this program.
First we did our performance and the song we sang was 'Blame it on the Boogie' by Michael Jackson. Next we paired up with a resident and made a paper plane. We then had to fly them to see who would win. Jonathan and Alf won! Alf is 100 years old! We then had some party food for afternoon tea. It was so sad we had to leave but we know that 4PJ will have a great time next term!

Mental Illness is an Illness
At the end of every news article after learning the sad news of Danny Frawley’s death mentioned was the line “Anyone needing help can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14”.
Mental Illness is indeed an illness. This needs to be stated and it needs to be treated as such. The hard aspect with this illness is that it is often extremely difficult to see it and sometimes signs of it. We hear of so many people who appear to be so happy on the outside but so deeply sad on the inside.
We obviously ask the question “Why?” and “How?”
In so many cases we cannot answer the questions except we are called to hold the person deep in our own heart and prayers.
One of the hardest aspects of dealing with deaths like Danny Frawley’s is that within three days of his death you need to search the papers to find a mention of him. Other news becomes the front page news.
Newspapers move on quickly. We as humans don’t. We grieve and in many cases grieve slowly.
SEN continues to tell stories, Fox Footy continues to tell stories and people tell each other stories about Danny.
Stories are the way we keep the Spirit of a person alive in our hearts.
At the end of the film “The Mission”, as a canoe with a little boy and girl in it drifts down the river, a voice comes over and says, “The Spirit of the dead is kept alive in the memory of the living”.
As we grieve Danny’s death we keep his Spirit alive through our memory.
But in a weeks’ time, a months’ time and a years’ time our prayers need to move to the family. How do we help them and others in similar circumstances to move on in their lives?
In moments of Death and Dying our Christian Faith kicks in. It is our Faith which helps us and consoles us. In the Catholic Mass for Funerals the Preface leading up toward the consecration of the bread and wine, the presider says, “…those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of eternal life with God to come. Indeed, Lord, for your faithful people life is changed not ended”.
It is this last line I hold dear to my heart. “Life is changed not ended.”
Life has indeed changed for Danny Frawley because he, like us, learned in his Catholic education that when we die life continues with God for eternity.
For us still living the earthly life, our life too has changed but not ended. The reason is because life will never be the same. Life can never be the same. Life without Danny changes many people's lives. Life without our loved ones changes the way we live life.
But what we can do is keep those we truly love who have died alive in our hearts. We can also ensure that we tell those we love that we do love them. That we take the time to ask those whom we are concerned about R U Okay?
The Good News of Jesus Christ is about LOVE. The end of Matthew’s Gospel in chapter 28 Jesus commissions all of us in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit to go out and spread this Good News of love.
Don’t wait till your loved one dies before you tell them that you love them!

ST. PETER'S FOODBANK
Thank you to all the volunteers that have cooked for us in the past few weeks.
St. Peter’s Primary School Food Bank was established in 2013 with families volunteering to cook meals for other families in the school community during a time of need. Whether there is illness, hospitalisation of a family member, bereavement, the arrival of a new baby, moving house or even if someone is in need of a little extra TLC, the Food Bank can help.
We would like to invite parents to consider becoming one of our volunteer cooks. We anticipate each volunteer would only be required to cook 2-3 times per year. Of course, you are welcome to cook more often if you like.
We also encourage you to think about your friends and classmates at the school and keep the Food Bank in mind if they are going through a tough time. It is a completely confidential service and you can access it through us or through a staff member at St. Peter’s. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, please download our electronic brochure below.
We are looking for some new parents to sign up as volunteers to start cooking for our Food Bank. We love to have as many volunteers in our Food Bank pool as possible.
If you have not cooked for our Food Bank before, please ensure you email us prior to cooking, at sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au, and ask us for a Food Bank information pack.
If you become aware of someone in the school community needing a little help or TLC, please contact us. You can contact us confidentially at: sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au or call Katrina Chapman 0488 386 088 (Program Co-ordinator) or your class teacher, school office or Michael Hanney directly.
