Good afternoon Parents and Guardians,
I hope you're all well. Aside from the horrible wind and rain we had a very exciting event happen at St. Peter's today. An excavator and large dump truck were delivered which meant that demolition of the houses on Centre Road has begun!
Due to the proximity of the demolition to our front carpark there will be some barriers up over the next few weeks. We ask that you drive extra carefully in the mornings and adhere to the 5 km/h speed limit in our carpark.
MACSSIS Surveys
Each year our governing body MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools) asks for feedback around schools. This is through a survey known as MACSSIS. 100 families from our School Community will be randomly picked to answer these surveys. I will be in contact with you later this week if you are one of those families. The feedback that we receive from these surveys is invaluable and helps us with forward planning for St. Peter’s.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will be happening next Tuesday, 10th September starting at 2pm. A letter will be sent out early next week with instructions on how to access online interviews.
Dad’s Football Match
Congratulations to the Dads who played in the annual St. Peter’s Vs St. Paul’s Football match. It was a great victory for St. Peter’s winning 36 - 24.
On Sunday, 1st September, Jasmine Li from 4OG attended the ‘My Brother Jack’ awards ceremony as a finalist in the Senior Poetry category. These annual awards celebrate the talents of local writers and it was the 29th ceremony. There were over 800 entries from a range of young to old poets and short -story authors. Jasmine is congratulated for receiving a highly commended award for her poem ‘Unknown Waters’.
Unknown Waters
Ripples rushing in every direction
As the stone hit the water.
Bubbles gurgled and the aqua dispersed
And the lake submerged the rock as it sank
Into the unknown waters.
Until it buried itself into the mass
of other rocks that have been lost
To be gone forever.
The unknown waters
hold many things you don’t know
And it stays that way
Forevermore.

Reading is Magic!
What an appropriate theme for this year’s Book Week. It really was a magical week. Classes celebrated the week by reading several of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s short-listed books and completing wonderfully creative activities to show their comprehension of these stories.
Each class was visited by a guest reader to read one of these short-listed books. Our Foundation children were also visited by Nick Staikos, the State Member for Bentleigh and a past student of St Peter’s, who came to read one of his favourite stories. These reading sessions followed what can only be described as a truly magical Book Week Parade. How delightful it was to watch all the characters from so many stories come alive and prance around Casey so proudly. The teachers also showed off their creativity as they followed our school leader around for a lap of their own.
During the week, Karen Young led a number of volunteer staff to run a very successful Book Fair. Thanks to the generosity of families and staff, Karen was able to accumulate a massive $3483 to spend on new books for the library. (profit from our sales) Thank you to all who were able to support Karen’s endeavour to secure as many new books as possible. A huge thanks to Karen for the time and effort she put into making this possible.
And whilst all this was happening, Sue O’Mahoney, who does a mammoth job of running the Premiers’ Book Challenge, sent reminders that so many children have registered and completed the challenge and that there are several children who have almost completed it. As it is the final week for the challenge this week, it was a timely reminder to encourage your children to keep reading!
A huge congratulations to all our children for making sure Book Week really was magical!
PEER SUPPORT
What is Peer Support?
Peer Support is a student-led approach to Wellbeing.
Our Year 5 and Year 6 Senior students are trained as Peer Leaders and lead small groups of younger students in structured sessions.
The Peer Support program provides students with a supportive environment where children and young people develop skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to improve their mental, social and emotional wellbeing. Positive relationships are developed across the school through a series of engaging activities with a range of students of all ages. The program enables participating students to contribute in an environment where all can join in. Those students helping to lead the program also gain leadership skills.
How does Peer Support work?
The students will meet in small, mixed level groups in Weeks 5, 6, 8 and 9 across the school. Sessions will run for about 60 minutes using materials from Peer Support Australia. Peer Support Australia’s mission is to provide an evidence based, peer led approach to enhance the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of young people. Peer Leaders run supervised sessions to develop protective factors and strengthen positive relationships across the school. Our student leaders will meet prior to each session and together plan and prepare.
Our 2024 Unit: Stronger Together
The Stronger Together unit has an anti-bullying focus. The students identify their own strengths and then discuss what is respectful and what are unhealthy behaviours and how strategies, including talking to staff and parents can help. The module reinforces some of our schools key values and our policy and procedures.
Week 6 - Session 2 will focus on Including others/ Make the change
Week 7- Session 3 will focus on know your rights/ Make a change
If you have any queries please feel free to email me, Anne Pullan, Acting Wellbeing Leader, apullan@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au

BATTLE OF THE SAINTS - ST. PETER'S V ST. PAUL'S DADS FOOTBALL MATCH
On Saturday, 31st August the St Peter's dads competed in the Battle of the Saints, an annual footy match against St Paul's.
It was a great day full of corkies and pulled hammies. Families came from all over to watch and support the dads. Our amazing coaches led us to victory and the final score was 36 to 24.
John Camfield and Jarrod Rafferty won the Best on Ground award which they well deserved. At the end of the match they held up the Battle of the Saints Cup with pride!
A fundraiser was held to support Dare to Hope, a charity to help Pancreatic Cancer. We sold around 30 scarfes raising just under $1000 for research into Pancreatic Cancer! The dads and all the families watching had a great day and we’re all happy they brought home the flag!!
