FETE CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to everyone for ensuring our St Peter’s Fete was so successful. After all expenses we raised just over $30,000. There was a great feel about the day and a lot of fun was enjoyed by the St Peter's and wider East Bentleigh community.

To all stall co-ordinators and our parents and friends thank you for all your preparation and running of your stalls. To the staff of St Peter’s who gave up their time to support our community at a time when teachers are in the middle of report writing I also say thank you. A special thanks to Tim Courtney and Rob Smith who do a huge amount of work in organising, setting up and packing up. Finally to you the members of the parent body who gave up their time in the setting up, volunteering on the day and in the packing up at the end of the day. A successful event that will benefit our children.

STAFF CHANGES FAREWELL
Two staff members have advised me they will not be returning to St Peter’s in 2020. Rachel Hamilton-Smith has been at St Peter’s since 2003 fulfilling a number of roles from classroom teacher through to her current position as Teaching and Learning Leader and one of our three Co-ordinating Leaders. Rachel has accepted a position at St Michael’s Ashburton.
Cat Noble joined St Peter’s at the beginning of 2014. As well as being a classroom teacher Cat has also been our Wellbeing Leader and is one of our three Co-ordinating leaders. Cat has accepted a position at Toorak College, Mount Eliza campus.
Both Rachel and Cat will start their new positions at the beginning of the 2020 school year. It is always hard to farewell staff especially when they hold significant leadership positions at St Peter’s. Accepting that everyone must do what is good for their families and their careers is the reality of all work places. The fact that three teachers from St Peter’s all applied for positions and were successful reflects positively on our learning community and our development of teachers and leaders. Rachel and Cat will be sadly missed and we will farewell them as a community at the end of the year.
Plans for replacing Cat and Rachel in their leadership positions are underway and will be communicated in a future newsletter.
STAFF CHANGES CONGRATULATIONS
I am delighted to advise our community that Kye Moore (Year 3) and her husband Tom will be welcoming a baby to their family in May 2020. This is a very exciting time for them and on behalf of our whole community I wish them all the best. Kye will be returning next year but will not be taking on a full time teaching position.
STAFF CHANGES WELCOME
I am delighted to advise the St Peter’s community that we have appointed Meg Rahilly to the teaching staff at St Peter’s to commence at the beginning of the 2020 school year. After finishing her secondary schooling at Star of the Sea Meg has completed a Bachelor of Arts (Pyschology), a Masters of Counselling and a Masters of Teaching. Meg has already joined us for last Friday’s planning day and we look forward to the knowledge and enthusiasm she will bring to St Peter’s.
With three teachers leaving at the end of the year a number of part time staff have increased their days of work and Jess Reaper and Clare Ebden are returning part time from their parental leave. This along with Meg’s appointment will cover all vacancies.
STUDENT SCHOOL REPORTS
This Semester we are pleased to announce that you will be receiving your child’s Semester Report online via the nForma Parent Portal for the first time.
Instructions on how to access the nForma Parent Portal will be sent out to the email addresses that have been supplied to the school. These emails will be sent out on 12th December 2019.
It is very important that you have updated your email addresses with the school, as an automated email containing instructions and login details will come from no-reply@nforma.com.au and not from the school. Please ensure that you check your junk/spam folder for an email from that address.
It is highly recommended that you use a computer to access your child’s reports for the first time. Subsequent logins can be made on a mobile device if preferred.
Once you have followed the instructions, you will be able to view your child’s report online.
Once in the portal you will need to choose your child/children and then choose ’Assessment and Reporting’. Then select the year/semester.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Chris Joplin at: cjoplin@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au
THANKYOU
On behalf of the staff at St Peter’s who were involved in last Friday’s planning day I would like to thank our Parents and Friends Committee who provided a delicious morning tea as a sign of appreciation from the parent body for all the work of teaching and non teaching staff. It was greatly appreciated.
DRIVING INTO FRONT CAR PARK
I have been contacted by the parent of a student from another school to advise me that her child was nearly hit by a car turning into our driveway off Centre Road. If you use this driveway please keep an eye out for people walking or riding along the footpath as you enter the school.
BUSHFIRE FUNDRAISER
Last Thursday the school was awash with a touch of yellow, with St Peter's helping to raise money for the victims of the bushfires in NSW & Qld.
Year 5 students Daisy Nousis, Amelie De Luca & Connie Kimble came up with the idea because they saw the tragic news about the bushfires, and wanted to do something to help people that had lost their homes.
With students and staff giving a gold coin donation for the privilege of wearing a touch of yellow, a phenomenal total of $1,168 was raised.
This money will be donated to the St Vincent De Paul Bushfire Appeal.
$50 could help feed a family that have lost their homes.
$150 could help pay for bills or other unexpected expenses.
$300 could help a family who left all their belongings behind.
$1100 can help those whose homes have been damaged or destroyed to set up again with bedding, furniture, and appliances.
The girls truly want to extend their thanks to the school community.
"Your support and attitude towards helping can help kids, adults, families, and animals get to safety and survive these fires. It also helps them rebuild their homes and get help when they really need it!"
Congratulations girls on such a wonderful initiative!!
JAPAN TRIP 2019
The students who attended our inaugural trip to Japan returned safely on Saturday. Our Thanks to Joyce Henderson for the huge amount of work she put into organising and leading this tour. Our thanks also to Michael Juliff and Cathy Epstein for joining this trip to support Joyce and our students. A report on the highlights of the trip will be included in our next newsletter.

YEAR THREE AND YEAR FOUR CELEBRATION OF SACRAMENTS
As the Year Three students celebrate their first Reconciliation and Year Four students celebrate their first Eucharist over a number of weekends during the year we decided to hold a celebration of these Sacraments as a whole year Level. Our Year Threes joined the celebration of Mass on Friday, 15th November and the Year Fours on Friday, 8th November. They then had a shared Pizza lunch as part of their celebration.
YEAR 3 RECONCILIATION CELEBRATION
On Friday, 15th November, we went to church for a special Mass to celebrate our Reconciliation. When we were at the church, Father Jacob told us the story of the Prodigal Son. Then he asked us, “What would it feel like if we were the Prodigal Son?” Father Jacob told us how the father in the story forgives his son. He also explained that God will always forgive us.
After Mass, we sat down in the hall and we had a special lunch that was organised by Mr. Hanney, Mr. Dooley and Mrs. Stasiak. It was pizza! Each of us got 2 slices of pizza. It was delicious!
We would like to thank Mr. Hanney and Mr. Dooley for organising our special day and Mrs. Stasiak who organised the pizza!

ADVENT ASSEMBLIES STARTING MONDAY, 2nd DECEMBER
The season of Advent begins in Week 9, Monday, 2nd December. We will be having Advent paraliturgies in the hall on a Monday morning starting on the 2nd. There will be no meditation on Monday mornings for the rest of the term. The paraliturgies will start at approximately 8:50am. Parents are most welcome to attend.
YEAR 5 STAR LAB IN SCHOOL ACTIVITY
On the 12th of November, Year 5 participated in a fantastic In School Activity. This In School Activity was called Star Lab and it was all about SPACE.
At 0900 hours on the 12th of November, we entered a big inflatable dome eager and ready to learn. Once inside, we laid down and watched a projected tour that transported us through and around the solar system. The video was well explained and we learnt a lot. We learnt all about our solar system, galaxies, gravity, the Goldilocks zone and much more. It felt like we were travelling through space! “It was Excellent!” “Very interactive and fun” said the Year Fives.

YEAR 4 CAMP TO OASIS MT. EVELYN
Camp was so much fun I wish we didn’t have to leave. On the way to camp I sat next to Niamh. When we arrived at camp Mr Mac talked to us about what we were doing. After that we had free time on the oval. Me and my friends kicked the footy and we had some fruit and snack. Then we went to the dining room and we made place mats, and coloured them in. It was fun.
My first Activity was rock climbing. It was so awesome. We got 3 turns each. On my third turn we did a race and I won! I got all the way to the top. Even Mr Joplin climbed the wall. He was racing Zara - Mr Joplin lost.
The next activity was the flying fox, I was the 2nd person to go on it. It was so cool. Everyone was doing funny dances when they were on the flying fox. Everyone was also cheering for each other. When you were near the end of the flying fox you had to squeeze into a ball and tuck your chin into your chest so you did not hurt yourself.
After the flying fox we did team challenge with Mrs Dowling, Team Challenge is when you do fun activities working as a team to complete them, my team completed all of the activities.
The first challenge was so hard because a bit of it was broken so it was even harder.
After we went to our cabins to had a quick shower and got dressed into comfy clothes. When we had finished that we had time to have a rest, Then we had dinner. When we finished our dinner we went for a night walk. It was really fun but you had to make sure that you did not trip on the logs because it was hard to see in the dark. Then we hopped into our cabins and went to bed.
The next morning we had to pack our bags and clean up our cabins for cabin check. After that it was the last time we went inside our cabins. I had to leave early because I was setting breakfast out and getting ready for breakfast. I had Weet-Bix. After breakfast we went to another activity. My next activity was Archery with Mr Mac. It was really fun but really hard.
We got a cookie before our next activity which for me was Candle Making
I made a donut it was really fun beside from when I burnt myself, because I thought the wax was water.
After that I had Crate Climbing with Mrs Peake I wasn’t that good I only made 8 crates. At the start I was the bellay team, which is where you make sure the others don’t fall or hurt themselves Then we had a burger for lunch which was delicious.
This was the worst bit - we had to leave. I really really didn’t want to leave! It was so much fun I wish we could have stayed for longer. Camp was AWESOME!!!

This year's Gaelic Football Gala Day took place on Monday, 11th November at Centenary Park. This was its third year running and the biggest one yet with around 200 students from three schools, Stella Maris, Beaumaris, Sacred Heart Sandringham and St Peter’s, Bentleigh East. There was a total of 16 teams with each team fielding 9 players per game. The competition was strong on the day and the games were very close.
In the Boys A competition the St Peter’s Limerick team won the grand final. They were down by five points at half time and came back to steal the game by two points with some great performances displayed on the day. In the Boys B competition the St Peter’s team Cork came third overall and Tipperary in the girls division also finished third.
We would like to thank Miss Fitzpatrick, Mr Mac, Miss Dabb and Mr Hanrahan for organising this event and for coaching us in the weeks prior. It was a fantastic day out and a great opportunity to learn a new sport.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN
Thank You to the parent and wider community of St Peter's for all their efforts in collecting the Earn and Learn stickers this year.
We have now received some wonderful resources for our School. The children will love using the new resources as part of their learning in STEM.
We ordered some fairytale storybooks with a twist. The children will have to use their STEM and creative thinking skills in order to problem solve and design solutions.
We also received a robotics and STEM kit that will allow our children to build and program some of their own creations.
The sound and light kit will make this science topic come alive and create quite a noise around our school!
The electrical kits will also enable real hands on learning.
So thank you once again for all your efforts and support in this program.
Governance of Catholic Schools
As parents are currently aware the Governance of each Catholic Primary Schools is the responsibility of the Parish Priest. Following a recommendation from the Royal Commission this governance structure must change by 2021. The Archdiocese of Melbourne and Catholic Education Melbourne are in consultation currently with schools and Parish Priests around what this new Governance Model will look like.
The following thought from Archbishop Peter Commensoli’s message at the outset of the process expresses an important consideration in our current endeavours: ‘Our parents and families of Catholic school students deserve the best and the safest learning environments we can offer for their children, and good governance is one of the ways we can ensure the future of Catholic education in the years ahead.’

My mother used to say that if you were feeling a little depressed just watch the SBS nightly news and you may feel that things are a little better compared to the rest of the world. My mother was right in many ways. Last week as I drove to School I was listening to the 7am news. It began with the news of a road death in Melbourne and then two shootings in the USA. It then talked about the fact that 50% of workers have experienced some kind of mental health issues due to workload and due dates.
Mental Illness is a name or title which describes many different conditions. Within the umbrella of this illness there are many different categories as well as levels that a person suffers mental illness.
What is good now is that people do not have to suffer alone in experiencing and dealing with mental illness. Our society has come a long way.
Does working in a Catholic School make it easier to deal with mental illness? Of course the answer is NO. But hopefully our Catholic values and ideals assist. In a Catholic School we use words such as Hope, Love, Respect and Journey to describe the Community we are part of. These words are at the heart of the Gospel message of Truth.
But does this make it easier to deal with mental illness? Again the answer is NO BUT hopefully within a Catholic School we openly acknowledge that some people in our Community suffer illnesses which are hard to understand fully. We acknowledge with no judgment.
In a Catholic School we say we are different to other Schools. The only reason we are different is that everything we do is underpinned by the Gospel message of Truth proclaimed by Jesus.
When Jesus sat at the well and accepted a drink of water from a Samaritan woman he knew he was breaking the religious law of his time. But what he was in fact doing was listening to a person who was suffering. In listening Jesus welcomed this person in ways no one had welcomed her before.
May our Catholic Schools be truly welcoming to others and particularly minorities.
In thinking about this piece I came across a beautiful prayer by a mother whose son is experiencing mental illness. You might like to read this beautiful prayer and pray for all those in our Community who are suffering in ways we are unaware of.
Edward Dooley (Mission and Faith Leader)
A Mother's Prayer for Mental Illness
As I stumble from my bed this morning, help me to remember to be gentle and kind.
My child's mind is shredding into a million pieces. He lives in a constant state of atrocious fear. I can see it in his eyes. Give him peace.
Guide me as I hold him in my arms. Help me to know what to say. What to do. Fill my heart with healing love, understanding, and empathy.
Give me the strength of a thousand angels to hold back my tears. My heart is broken and a tidal wave of grief is overwhelming me with the need to cry. Give me the strength to bear it long enough to keep it from disturbing my child. Help me find someone I can safely bring it to.
Help me answer my family's questions with the same amount of compassion I would want for myself. Help me remember they are hurting too. This is an unwelcomed assault on an entire family. My heart is not the only heart that is broken. We all need time and each other to heal.
As my journey becomes more and more isolative and lonely, remind me that the lack of involvement on the part of family and friends is not always because of the stigma and the ignorance. For many, it is because they are hurting too. They have the privelege of turning to their own lives. This is my family's life now. I must deal with it whether I am hurting or not.
Send me your best physicians and healers. Give me presence of mind, as I walk through the exhaustion of my grief to not settle for just any one no matter how tiresome the journey becomes.
Help me adjust to the idea, that although it appears my son is gone, there will be no goodbye. And that he is still inside somewhere waiting for us to find him.
Infuse the creative part of my mind with solution oriented thinking. Give me hope. Even if it is just a glimmer of hope. A mother can go for miles on just one tiny glimmer. Let me see just a flicker of the sparkle of joy in his eyes.
Guide my hands, calm my mind, as I fill out the multitude of forms for services. Then help me do it again over and over.
Provide me with the knowledge. Lead me to the books I need to read, the organizations I need to connect with. As you work though the people in my life, help me to recognize those that are here to help. Help me trust the right ones. Shine a light upon the right path.
Give me the courage to speak my truth; to know my son's truth. And to speak for him when he is unable to do it for himself. Show me when to do for him what he is not capable of doing for himself. Help me to recognize the difference.
Help me to stand tall in the face of the stigma; to battle the discrimination with the mighty sword of a spiritual warrior and to deflect the sting of blame and faultfinding from the ignorant and the cruel.
Preserve my love for my family. Shield my marriage with the wisdom of the love that brought us together.
Protect him from homelessness, loneliness, victimization, poverty, hunger, hopelessness, relapse, drugs, alcohol, suicide, cruelty and obscurity.
Lead us to the miracles of better medications, better funding, better services, safe and plentiful housing, meaningful employment, communities who care, enlightenment. Help us to find some way to replace all the greed with humanitarian work and intrinsic reward again.
Most of all, give me the strength to deliver whatever I can to the work of unmasking the man made ugliness of this disease and revealing the human and all of it's suffering beneath.
Finally, when it is my time to leave my son behind, send a thousand angels to take my place.

School Sport Victoria conduct State team trials for the sports listed (below) along with other sports that can be found on their website; AFL, Netball & Soccer nominations open on December 1st and close March 1st. There will not be District trials, instead elite & outstanding performers in each specific sport only can apply via the School Sport Victoria website. The expectation is that students nominating would have won at least a Best & Fairest or MVP in their chosen sport at the highest level of competition offered at their club, preferably finished high in League voting, along with being very fit, most likely in Cross Country and Athletics teams as well as being outstanding players in our Inter-school Sport Program. Any parent considering nominating should consult Mr McCarthy prior to paying the nomination fee to assess the student's suitability. The closing date for initial school (not SSV) nominations to ensure your child's participation is Tuesday 10th December.
Australian Football (Boys / Mixed & Girls), Baseball, Basketball, Football (Soccer), Hockey, Netball, Touch Football and Cricket which has a different process (see SSV site for details).
Tennis is done via a Bentleigh District trial where students playing a very high level of competitive tennis can nominate by emailing jmccarthy@spbentleigheast.
Check the website for all other sports noting some years State Swimming and Athletic teams are chosen via external competitions rather than through school-based District / Division/ Region/State Competitions, Cross Country is done via Bentleigh District Carnivals and beyond. When nominating your child for more than one sport you should also note that trials for AFL, Soccer, Netball & Basketball may be on the same day eliminating the possibility of going through for more than one mainstream sport.
