As we move in to the seventh week of online learning this term we are now into some consistent routine with student and teacher interactions. Hopefully things are running smoothly for you. In saying this I fully appreciate that for many of you this is an incredibly stressful time. Throughout this period you need to look after yourselves and your families. If this means that there are days where your child will not be online for any child or adult physical or mental health reasons then you just need to let your child’s teacher know via email that your child will not be online.
Churches of Victoria are proposing that we end winter on Monday the 31st of August by taking a moment to reflect on what the last months have meant for so many people. This to be followed by looking to the future with hope and prayer. Details of this are contained in a flier at the end of this newsletter.
Most of this newsletter involves sharing some resources or suggestions that our families have been using. These are provided as a resource to use if you wish. Hopefully things in the wider community will continue to improve and I will be able to update you on what changes that may apply to schools in the not too distant future. In the meantime stay safe.
WORLD TEACHERS DAY VIDEO
Catholic Education Melbourne is creating a Diocesan wide video for World Teacher’s day in October. Your child or children might like to create a short video clip of saying ‘Happy World Teachers Day’ and briefly (for around 15 seconds each) speaking about the qualities of a good teacher without naming the teacher. Videos can be filmed on mobile devices or laptop computers and sent through to me at feedback@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au by Friday, 4th September.
DAYS OF NO ONLINE LEARNING
Even while we are in this period of lockdown we are continuing our school review process to enable us to evaluate the last four years and to plan for the next four years of our strategic plan. Staff will be working in teams online on Friday, 11th September. There will be no online or onsite learning for students on this day. OSHClub will be offering a full day program for children of permitted workers.
SCHOOL FEES
When we are clearer about when the current restrictions end and what implications this has for term four I will work with our School Board to look at what changes need to be made to fees and levies this year and in 2021. In the meantime if the new restrictions have added to your financial pressure and you require assistance please email fees@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au so that I can assist you in responding to your needs. This email address is only viewed by me and Loretta Ballas, our school Finance officer. All correspondence is confidential.
NEXT COMMUNICATION
My next whole school communication will be next Monday, 31st August.
Thank you- a 6VCT Message:
A man once said Leadership isn’t a title, it's an action or example. Who would have thought 2020 would be like this! We as Year 6 Leaders have experienced a one of a kind last year of Primary School, and it's been one big roller coaster. This experience has changed our perspective on life, however being a leader is still happening right before our computer screens. We still do many leadership roles online and one of them is Online Assembly.
6VCT was honoured to make this happen, especially through these tough times, just a little bit of normal Year 6 life has been such a pleasure. We enjoyed every moment! We're proud to say that we are the first Year 6’s in St Peter's history to do an online Assembly! As 6VCT always aims high, we were excited to take this opportunity to do this Assembly, it was so much fun, and encouraging. It helped us feel motivated to do more to help our school, even if we can’t be there.
We are so grateful for all our teachers who helped with this process, for example, Mr Lane, Mrs Van, Ms Tankard, Mr Joplin and our Principal Mr Hanney. They have been there the whole time. On behalf of 6VCT we really appreciate the time and effort everyone has put into this assembly. It is a bit different from assemblies at school, but still so much fun!
So where will assembly take us? Well next fortnight (Week 8) 6VCT will be hosting another Assembly to keep you updated on the school! We thank the teachers and classmates for helping with this project, it is not as easy as it seems! So we look forward to seeing you viewing our assemblies!
Hope you stay safe and healthy during these tough times! Stay strong, sit back and watch this week's Assembly- 6VCT

The St Peter’s Cookbook committee want to let you know that they have continued to move forward with the “Our Community Table” Cookbook (slowly but surely!)
All the recipes are now in and ordered into chapters, they have found an amazing food stylist and photographer so as soon as it is safe to do so the photography days will be scheduled in.
We have shared two recipes from the “Our Community Table” Cookbook below:

Joan’s Yo-Yos
Downes Family
Here is a recipe for ‘Joan’s Yo-Yos’ which I grew up on and Charlie and
Matilda now love too. Their Nan (Joan) is famous for baking these and has
requests for them constantly by family members and friends.
Ingredients
Yo-yo’s
125g icing sugar
125g custard powder
350g plain flour
350g butter
Butter Icing
2 cups icing sugar, sifted
2 tbs melted butter
a few drops vanilla
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- Knead all of the yo-yo ingredients together. Place walnut sized balls of mixture onto
a baking paper lined tray and flatten slightly with a fork.
- Bake for 12 minutes or until slightly golden underneath.
- Sandwich two parts together with butter icing.
To make the butter icing, mix all ingredients together. Add a little more melted butter if
need be to ensure correct consistency.
Notes
This recipe can be doubled.
You can add some lemon juice to the icing.
Makes approx. 25 yo-yos
REACHING OUT TO NEIGHBOURS
One of our families shared with me this message which reflects a connection between neighbours.
I just wanted to share a beautiful gesture from our neighbours. They did a letterbox drop to all the school-aged families in our street with a lovely note and some goodies to tell us they were thinking of us during remote learning.
In return, I bought some treats and the kids made up a card with some clever word lettering using the name of the treats (pics below)!
Reaching out to neighbours in difficult times is super important. Even the simplest gesture or hello can make the world of difference and I think it’s important to all ‘check-in’ on one another for the purpose of one’s Mental Health.
Regards,
Angie

HEALTHY FUN PROGRAM
Thank you to Jo mother of Robbie 1GC for sharing this initiative organised by Coles and the AFL.
The AFL and Coles have created and launched an exciting new online program, Coles Healthy Kicks to inspire young Australians to enjoy healthy and happy lifestyles. This free online program delivers a holistic and entertaining weekly program airing every Monday – Friday at 4pm and combines fitness with creative play, mindfulness and nutrition. Kids can join AFL and AFLW players at home for strength sessions, mobility and flexibility exercises run by AFL premiership player James Podsiadly, along with useful tips and tricks for improving mental health and wellbeing. Parent and teacher resources are available to download and have been designed to the Australian Curriculum Standard, so it is perfect for home schooling.
