Hi I’m William Sam and this is Chelsea Reneaux. We are writing about the Year 5 Math Tournament. We competed against 63 Teams from 32 schools.
During to the COVID lock-down, 2 Teams of 4 Year 5 students entered an online Maths Competition. The competition was run by Thinksquare but because the students could not go to the schools involved they had to do the challenge online.
Word Nerd
The first thing we did was find the word with the most value. It could only have 1 syllable; the challenge was called the Word Nerd. The word that we came up with for the B team was scrounged and the word for the A Team was strengths; they were worth about 90 to 130 points. We used google chat a lot and we helped each other to find the biggest word.
Tumbling Tower
Tumbling Towers was next. We had to put the number in the right order from smallest to largest and we could switch the numbers around unless they were palindromic numbers. Every time you complete a level you get to go to the next level and one more box gets added and when you fail a level you drop down a level. The max level was the Mega Tower challenge which William Sam got up to Level 15 and Chelsea got up to Level 12.
Tic Tac Toe Mathstyle
The game we played after Tumbling Towers was Tic Tac Toe math style and there were two teams - the attacker and the defender. The attacker was trying to find the sum of 3 numbers to add to 15 and the defenders had to block them by putting out the number the attacker needed but the twist was you could only use the number once to win. We played against Bots and the score for Team B was 24 and the score for Team A was 21.
Sudo-Clue
The next thing we did was Sudo-Clue. we had to work it out like a sudoku puzzle with clues that we had to work out. There were 7 clues in total and we had to put all the answers on a 3 by 3 grid. Both Team A and Team B answers were the same but there were different ways to solve each clue. The clues involved smarts and some of them were weird. We had to scroll through 37 pages to find clue 2. The sudoku puzzle was a great way to challenge our minds and it was great fun finding all the clues.
Genius Quest
The Genius Quest was a great way to find out where decisions lead you to. You had to find a safe house and stop the animals. You had a health bar and it went down or up with the decisions you made. There was a part where you had to pick, either to follow the cat or leave the cat. Each decision you made was crucial to the path your story led you. There was estimation and multiple step answers in this game but it was all played out like a video game and it was mine and Will's favourite one of the day.
Crazy Challenges
There were smaller activities which were the Crazy Challenges. It was small things like finding as many things in alphabetical order in the time of 5 minutes. These challenges were a great way for us to take a break from math and to cool down. There was a t-shirt challenge where you put on as many t-shirts as possible in 5 minutes. Me and Will Sam both got on 10 t-shirts.
The End
At the end of the day both Team A and Team B got all of it done and all that hard work paid off. Team B which Chelsea was in came second and Team A which William was in, came first out of 63 schools. It was a fun filled day with lots of math with a fun twist.
A big Thank You must go to Mrs. Van Corler and Ms. Epstein for organizing the day.
With lockdown delaying the start of Term 3 Sport we can confirm the following dates:
Girls AFL Division Final - Monday, 16th August
Girls Netball Division Final - Friday, 20th August
Bentleigh District Athletics - Wednesday, 1st September
Those families involved will receive a letter with further details for each event.
AFLW DRAFT
Congratulations to former student Eliza James, who on Tuesday was drafted with pick 29 to the Collingwood Football Club AFLW Team. Eliza won the Sports Award in Year 6 and recently did work experience back at St Peter's. Eliza is a great role model for current students as to what can be achieved when you combine talent and work hard in order to achieve a dream.
Well done Eliza!!
