EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
It is normal practice at schools and workplaces to practise evacuations and lockdowns. By coincidence, and not related in any way to recent events in America, we are practising Lockdowns and Evacuation Drills on Friday, 10th June. All our lockdown and evacuation practices are just that. We will be explaining to the children that they are drills and the reasons for the drills.
The first lockdown practice will be for everyone to stay in rooms but continue with their work as there is a dog on site. It will mean any students who are outside including PE will need to come inside.
The second lockdown practice will have students and teachers under desks as there is a big storm coming and we want people away from windows.
The third practice will be an evacuation to Casey as there is a gas leak on site. This will then escalate to evacuating off site to Centenary Park at the advice of the Fire Department. If the weather is poor the evacuation will be to the Church.
This is a normal practice for us and as we have been impacted by students learning off site during COVID it is important that we practice so we are ready if we need to be.
PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT - Reminder
The use of social media and whats app groups certainly makes life easier for immediate communication. In using any social media platforms it is important that we remember what is valued at St Peter’s and what processes we have in place if any parent has a concern about their child or any other child. If unsure details can be found within our Parent Code of Conduct which is located on our website. https://spbentleigheast.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1167/parent_code_of_conduct_stpe.pdf
END OF TERM 2
The last day of Term Two will be Friday, 24th June with students being dismissed at 2:30pm. OSHC will be operating from 2:30pm.
BEGINNING OF TERM 3
The first day of Term Three is Monday, 11th July.
PUPIL FREE DAY - SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY IN TERM THREE
The Pupil Free Day for Term Three is Monday, 15th August. There will be no school for students on this day. OSHC will be offering a full day program on this day.
STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY
On Monday, 16th May, St Peter’s Teachers and Learning Support Officers engaged in a Professional Development Day looking into the curriculum areas of Literacy and Numeracy.
Literacy
During Term 1, staff began looking into the Science of Reading and the many different strategies teachers can use to improve student outcomes in reading, writing and spelling. This term we continued to learn about the approach to the Science of Reading and what it would look like in our classroom. Staff were able to learn about the many benefits of this new literacy research and the ways it will enrich our student outcomes.
Numeracy
Our Numeracy Leader Cathy Epstein organised guest speaker Paul Staniscia to come and talk to staff about developing teaching and assessing mathematical proficiency. Paul comes from a strong teaching and leadership background and was able to guide staff on how to further develop rich numeracy learning tasks for all students.
Professional Development Days are incredibly valuable to our staff and give us a much needed spark throughout the term to introduce new and outstanding ideas and teaching techniques to improve our practice and support student outcomes.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME
Chelsea 6SH
On Wednesday, 25th May we had the National Simultaneous Storytime telling morning. Our classmates from 6SH participated in teaching the Foundation Level to Year 2.
We worked in pairs cutting and preparing for the session which was held at recess on Wednesday, 25th May. We prepared what we were going to do, where we were going to stand and we met prior to the session with Mrs Mckee and she went over what we were going to do, at last the day came.
We came into the classroom full of excitement. My partner and I introduced ourselves to the class and then it began. We started reading trying to sound as animated as possible. We had the Year 2 class. When it reached the half way mark it was my turn to read the second half of the book. I did great and the kids had a great time.
Alice 6SH
On May 25th, 2022, Year 6 students from 6SH lead NSS (National Simultaneous Storytime) for the Junior Year Levels. First of all, we needed to thoroughly prepare for the class activity with Mrs McKee, where the Foundation students all the way up to Year 2 students would make their own unique Family Tree. Each pair of students would cut out tree trunks, leaves and apples for the class they were going to take one week prior to the day. We practised reading our storybooks, which this year was titled “Family Tree’.
On the big day, we made sure we had everything we needed, and then we headed off.
At 11:00am, it was time to start reading with the rest of Australia. The Junior students turned on their listening ears for the interesting story, and had tons of fun drawing their family members and making their own tree. They gave us a huge thank you for the day, and as a surprise, the classroom teachers got to keep the story so they could read it anytime.
Our Book Fair was held from Monday, 9th May to Friday, 13th May and the library was alive and buzzing with excitement. It was wonderful to see the smiles on everyone's faces as they browsed through the shelves.
We would like to thank all the staff, parents and students who supported our Book Fair. You helped us to sell approximately $7,500 worth of books, resulting in the school receiving $3,000 worth of new books for our library. Included in this amount was $600 worth of generous staff and family donations purchased during the fair.
With the funds, we have topped up our Year 2 Readers with hundreds of new books, as well as new novels for middle school and older readers. We also purchased some new picture storybooks for the juniors.
A big thank you to our wonderful staff and Year 6 Leadership Students who worked during their recess and lunch breaks and before and after school. The fair could not have gone ahead without your support.
Look out for the Book Fair again next year and in the meantime, enjoy reading!
Karen Young (Library/LSO)
The Book Fair for all year levels of the school was held from Monday, 9th May to Friday, 13th May. It was great that Karen and other teachers organised this so we could buy books throughout the school day. When I was up there helping out, other students were getting interested and also helped out. Lots of children bought books and I could see the smiles on their faces after they bought their books. This is just another way that we get to develop our leadership skills.
