COVID UPDATE
Rapid Tests
The Victorian Government is providing up to three further deliveries of Rapid Antigen Tests in Term 3 and again in Term 4 to schools. The first of these have been sent home today.
It is recommended that rapid antigen tests are used by students and staff when symptomatic.
Positive Cases
If students receive a positive rapid test result at any time, they must report this through the Department of Health system COVID-19 Positive Rapid Antigen Test Self-Reporting Form or via the coronavirus hotline at 1800 675 398.
I also need parents to report a positive result to me using the feedback@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au email address. This is so we can support you, record that the student will be absent while in 7-day isolation, and I can let the Parents and guardians of children in your child’s class know there has been a positive case onsite and that they should monitor for symptoms.
Students who have tested positive for COVID-19, have completed their 7-day isolation period and are subsequently asymptomatic do not need to undertake surveillance testing for twelve weeks.
Household Contacts
Household contacts are required to test negative using a rapid antigen test on at least 5 out of 7 days if they are attending or working at a school onsite. Household contacts attending school who are over 8 years of age are required to wear face masks indoors unless they have a valid exemption.
Face Masks
Current advice from the Victorian Government on the wearing of face masks is that wearing a face mask can help protect you and those around you. Face masks stop droplets spreading when you talk, cough, sneeze and laugh, which lowers your chance of spreading or catching the virus. This information is especially important for those who are medically at risk. The advice also strongly recommends the wearing of face masks in indoor settings (noting that exceptions to the recommendation apply to teaching circumstances when clear enunciation or visibility of the mouth is essential).
This is the recommendation and is not compulsory.
If you have any queries or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at feedback@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au
NEW STAFF
To continue to enhance the learning for students at St Peter’s we have employed three more Learning Support Officers. We welcome Dominic Cincotta (Wednesday and Thursday), Sarah Crough (Monday - Thursday) and Nancy Daidone (Wednesday and Thursday) and look forward to the extra assistance they will be able to provide.
NOTICE OF FAMILY HOLIDAYS DURING SCHOOL TERM
If you are planning a holiday of a week or more I am required to organise the class teacher to put a Learning Plan in place. To make sure that I am meeting this requirement I ask that you give me at least two weeks notice of any holidays of a week or more during school time. Please do this using principal@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au

ST. PETER'S COOK BOOK
Three years ago, the P & F started putting together Our Community Table - a cookbook to celebrate the food of our diverse school community. It’s been a long haul, but will be well worth the time and effort spent to produce what will be a beautiful cookbook and a major piece of the P & F’s fundraising this year.
We need your help in the final push to get the cookbook to print. Further in this newsletter are details on how you can get involved, and I urge you to consider what you can do to help.
CONGRATULATIONSIn July 2021, the Victorian Government announced new Child Safe Standards (CSS) to further strengthen child safe environments and protect children from abuse. The new CSS came into affect on Friday, 1st July 2022.
From 1st July 2022, 11 new Victorian Child Safe Standards replaced Victoria’s seven current Child Safe Standards and principles in place since 2016.
The revised Victorian CSS support greater national consistency, reflecting the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations, developed following the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The CSS include new requirements, including:
- the involvement of families and students in child safety efforts
- focus on the safety of Aboriginal children and young people
- management of the risk of child abuse in online environments
- governance, systems and processes to keep students safe.
The CSS are underpinned by Ministerial Order No. 1359 (MO 1359), which was released by the Victorian Government on 10 February 2022. MO 1359 defines the actions schools must take to meet the requirements associated with the new CSS.

Amelia V, Matthew B, Liam M, Alex E, Sid N, Holly P, Maddie M, Nick S and Harrison G. Once the names got picked out they sat down on the table and Mr Joplin grabbed big bags of KFC and gave it to those kids. While the other 70 people had the experience of eating cold rice and dirty water/cold tea.
I felt that it was a little unfair but I still didn’t really mind it. It was a good experience that now I get to know what it feels like to starve in hunger and to have cold food like they do.
Tia Karras and Zoe Rezsnecki-Carrere
Last Friday the Year 5’s did a social experiment and we tried a Global Reality Meal. We went into the hall and Mr Hurst did most of the introduction about people living in poverty. The teachers set up an experiment to see how grateful we really are. We watched a video to see what poverty is really like and then tried it out for ourselves. Mrs Bramich pulled out nine different names out of a ziploc bag. Everyone thought that the nine people (Amelia V, Harrison, Matthew, Maddie, Nicholas, Alex E, Liam M, Sid & Holly ) at the table were going to be in the slum but all the people that were chosen got a feast, including a variety of different foods from KFC (kentucky fried chicken wings, chips, chocolate mousse and cordial in wine glasses - the amount of luxuriousness was way over the top). On the other hand the people at the slum drank dirty water and ate cold rice. It felt like the gravel on the ground from centenary park - we are not being dramatic but this is the reality of what is happening right now across different places around the world. Everyone in the "poor class" were absolutely furious!
Milla Bradshaw
When I heard Mrs Bramich say 9 names to sit on the table I went into panic because I thought it was going to be bad but then when I saw a KFC bag I looked around the room and realised what was happening.
When Mrs Reaper said to the rest of us “come get some food” I thought it was going to be dirty water and something disgusting. When I saw it was just rice, I started thinking, is it cold? or hot? and when I felt it - it was cold and I didn't like it. I tried the rice and it was so gross but I ate some anyway because we were the poor people. If I was poor I would eat it because not many poor people get a lot of food so I was grateful for what I got, even though there were "rich people" eating KFC.
Minutes later Mr Mac started to talk about charging at the rich and stealing their food. I was scared because I thought the glasses may break or they might spill a drink on someone or people could get really hurt. I didn’t want to do that but a lot of people were getting ready to charge at them and steal their food. I was getting ready but I didn't really want to because I felt bad. When I looked behind me, a lot of people had evil smirks on their faces and I knew a lot of people would try and get most of the "rich people's" food.
At the end of the experiment I felt bad for the poor people and I understand what it feels like not to have tasty food and fresh water. Now I understand how most of us are lucky to have a home, fresh water, home made meals, our own bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen and a fridge to put our food in.
Isla Green
Last Friday the Year Fives did a social experiment on the reality of food hunger. We all went to the hall after snack, we all sat on the ground and we had to watch a slideshow about the people who are barely getting by on one to two dollars. Then after the slideshow, Mrs Bramich pulled out nine names from a bag. The names were: Harrison, Sid, Maddie, Alex E, Amelia V, Nic, Holly, Matthew and Liam M. The people who got to go up, got to be the rich and got KFC and everyone who didn’t go up had to eat cold rice and drink dirty water, like the poor. Everyone was really angry and annoyed so Mr Mac pretended to be a protestor to go against the rich. The poor got ready to attack the rich but the government (who was Mr Hanney) stopped us from stealing the food from the rich.

YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO MELBOURNE BOTANIC GARDENS & SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE
2RN Jasmine Li
Yay! Friday, 17th June was a big day! We were going on a big white bus to the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Shrine of Remembrance. The bus ride was so much fun 2RN and 2AC went on the same bus. On the bus we played lots of games like i spy and chopsticks. We also saw some cool things like the MCG and the Yarra River. Finally we arrived at our first stop, the Royal Botanical Gardens.
Isabel Bonnici 2OG
First up, we went to see some crunchy, scrunchy Autumn leaves. (We even got a sneak peek of the light show). We scuttled along to the herb garden to smell the plants and to make a pot pourri to take home. They smelt amazing and beautiful. Next, we all skipped to the fern rainforest and our guide Clare told us that if you put your hands behind your ears (like a kangaroo) you can hear the waterfalls, the birds, the plants and the trees waving in the wind. My favourite things were playing with the splashing, splooshing, freezing water fountain and the 10,000 year old tree!!! Clare told us that the tree was found by a farmer when the waters were low and he brought it to the Royal Botanical Gardens.
2GP Sam Diamantaras
After the gardens we went to the Shrine of Remembrance. We saw the statue of the father and son soldiers. In the crypt, there is a hole in the ceiling where the light shines at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month. It shines directly on the quote, ‘Greater love has no one than this to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’
2AC Georgie Wan
One Friday, 17th June the whole of Year Two went to the Botanic Gardens. My favorite part was when we walked under the Dinosaur Tree because it was so spiky! After lunch we went to the Shrine and climbed up to the roof. It was so much fun to see all the buildings of the city. We could see the building with William Barack’s face on it. We also saw the uniforms of the army soldiers. It was the best day ever!

On Monday, 20th of June, at 9:10am, girls from across Years 5 & 6 played a spectacular football match at Centenary Park against Oakleigh South Primary School. The girls filed onto the field with their heads held high, they were ready to play. The game commenced at around 9:20am and they shot off, scoring 3 goals in the first half. We continued to play stunningly, while the other team was a great competition and put up a fair fight. We came out on top, winning St. Peter's 35 V Oakleigh South 14. When the last whistle went we all gathered around and congratulated each other. It was a great match and we are all excited to advance to play in the Beachside Division Play-off on the 19th July.
