PRIVILEGE OF PRINCIPALSHIP
On the 20th of July I had the privilege of attending the St Bede’s and Kilbreda College Performance of the Wizard of Oz. It was wonderful to see so many talented young people sharing their gift with a very appreciative audience. I am graeteful to the principals of St Bede's and Kilbreda for inviting me to attend.

BEANIE FOR BRAIN CANCER DAY

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY CHILDHOOD ANXIETY STUDY
This study will determine if a computer delivered treatment designed to help children control their attention improves and reduces children’s anxiety compared to another computer-delivered treatment based on cognitive-behavioural therapy.
Anxiety is defined as feelings of nervousness, worry and fear that is usually brought on by seeing or experiencing certain triggers or events, and/or by the expectation that this is too frightening or difficult to cope with. Anxiety can be helpful when dealing with new challenges and novel situations. However, if it occurs too often or too strongly, it can lead to children not coping in many situations. For many children and their parents, anxiety can be highly disruptive and prevent children from doing things that other children their age can do.
This project will examine two treatment conditions and determine if they are as effective as each other in alleviating children’s anxiety disorders.
Write a Book in a Day is a fun, creative and collaborative competition for students in years 5-12. Teams of up to ten have just twelve hours to write and illustrate a book from start to finish. To make it even more fun, unique parameters must be included in the story. Digital editions of the completed stories are made available on the Online Library and shared with young cancer patients in hospitals all around Australia. We entered this competition for the first time in 2021 and the St Peter’s PuzzlePEnners won the Best Book (VIc/SA/Tas ) Division.
On Thursday, 15th September, St Peter’s will have one Year 6 team entering this competition. The team will be selected from interested students who submit a narrative for adjudication. The top ten story writers and illustrators will be asked to join the team. If selected, the children will be expected to be at school for twelve hours, from 8:00am-8:00pm. (or at which time they have completed their book, no later than 8:00pm.) Further details about the competition and the logistics of the day will be forwarded to those students who are selected for the team. Level Six parents, please chat with your child about whether you would like them to try out for this writing endeavour and would be happy for them to continue working until the dead-line on the day.
This initiative is organised to encourage young writers and is also used as a fund-raiser for Kids’ Cancer Project. The school supports the team by paying their registration. If you would like to support this endeavour and help raise much-needed research funds for this amazing project, we will share the link to the students’ individual fund-raising pages once the team has been selected and registered. Keep you eyes open in forth coming bulletins.
As outlined in the last Newsletter, in July 2021, the Victorian Government announced new Child Safe Standards (CSS) to further strengthen child safe environments and protect children from abuse.
From 1st July 2022, 11 new Victorian Child Safe Standards replaced Victoria’s seven Child Safe Standards and principles in place since 2016.
These were explained in the last Newsletter along with an explanation of the polices that had been updated and the new ones that have been developed.
As a result of this further strengthening the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) have updated and republished their Statement of Commitment to Child Safety - A safe, nurturing and empowering culture for all children and young people in Catholic schools.

MATHS GAME DAY AT ST. BEDE'S MENTONE
On Thursday, 28th July, 8 BRAVE students from Year 5 travelled down to St.Patrick's Primary in Mentone. We were driven by Ms. Epstein and Mr. Mac in their own cars!
When we got there it was 9:30 and by the time we left it was 2:45. It was a massive day of just maths! We were split into 2 Teams of 4. We were greeted by the Year 6 leaders at St. Patricks, the school also had some special guests from MAV (Maths Association of Victoria) there.
At St. Patricks we were challenged by difficult problem solving booklets, maths games and scavenger hunts, all related to maths. We started off the day by solving some maths problems, a couple were quite challenging. In each booklet there were 5 questions, for every question you got right it was one point. The first St. Peter's team got 1.5 and the second team scored 3.
Some teams were excellent at it. Next we did the Maths games, Footy Feud, ROWCO, Mabble and Prime Climb which were half luck and half strategy. The last activity was a scavenger hunt where you had to answer questions, where they were answered all across the school, like finding how many yellow dots there were and what was the perimeter of the basketball court. Both teams did very well with one team coming tied 4th. It was a great day full of fun.!!
