BOOK WEEK PARADE THANKYOU
After a very successful Book Week culminating in a fun parade on Friday I would like to acknowledge the incredible amount of work that Kerry McKee our Literacy Leader put in to ensure the week was a wonderful celebration and was also a very positive learning experience. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and Kerry ensured that the week involved many classroom activities around the nominated books which exposed our children to great books. I would also like to thank Karen Young in our library who ensured we had all the resources we needed.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our Year Six students who fully engaged and made sure it was a great experience across the school. It is leadership like this that we encourage and are proud to see.
Finally I wish to congratulate and thank the staff who also engaged fully and by dressing up for the parade made sure the students definitely enjoyed this event.
Please see recounts and photos from students in the Book Week section of this Newsletter.
DAD'S FOOTBALL COMMUNITY EVENT
The St Peter’s v St Paul’s Dad’s Football Game on Saturday was a wonderful community event on a magnificent day weather wise. Congratulations to everyone who made this day such a success. I would particularly like to thank John Camfield (Jemima 4RB and Imogen 2OG) for all his organisation and Brett Howe who celebrated his birthday with a great coaching display. I would also like to congratulate Simon Baum (Kai 6KM) who captained in his fifth and final game and Rob Davis (Alexia 4RB and Kyal 1CO) who was named best on ground. I promised all the dads involved wonderful Father’s Day gifts if they won so make sure your children are ready for the Father’s Day Stall on Friday.
St Peter’s dads completed a four peat by defeating St Paul’s dads in a very competitive game. With very accurate kicking the final score was St. Peter's 7 2 44 / St. Paul's 4 16 40
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
Following the end of the Federated model of Leadership across the three schools in our parish one of the items requiring change was the Acknowledgement of Country that we use as it was a Federation acknowledgement. We also wanted to adjust the acknowledgement to make sure that it was student friendly and understandable. I am very grateful to Cate Sanders our Creative Arts teacher who took on this project. She worked with Justin McCarthy in his role of Wellbeing Leader to engage our Student Representative Council (SRC) and the result is an acknowledgement that is specific to St Peter’s created with the student voice engaged. Cate then in her magnificent way has created a visual artistic representation that is on display in our school foyer. My thanks to Cate, Justin and our senior students for what they have done for us.

Part of our Master Plan included the improving of signage around the school. I am very grateful to Justin McCarthy, in his role of Leader of School Operations, and Monica Bramich, as our Leader of Community, for the work they have put into this. As a result we have a number of signs around the school around identification, safety requirements and child safety commitments. Here are some examples of the new signs. If you have any suggestions for signs for around the school please email Justin McCarthy jmccarthy@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au
REPORT ON STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING 15th August - CHRIS JOPLIN
Our third whole staff Professional Learning Day for the year took place on Monday, 15th August. For the first time in quite a while we were able to dedicate a whole day of Professional Learning to Religious Education which was so wonderful for our staff.
Our day started with Father Elio Capra speaking about the topic of “What makes a Catholic School Catholic in the 21st Century”. Father Elio has such a great insight into our faith from a modern standpoint and had our staff engaged in a great conversation for 2 hours. For those of you who have had the pleasure of hearing Father Elio speak at our Sacramental Nights you will already know how great he is to listen to. For those who haven’t, I strongly encourage you more than ever to make sure to come to our Sacramental Nights to hear his message of hope.
Our sessions later in the day were dedicated to looking at how Religious Education assessment is properly used in Catholic Schools. Many years ago schools moved away from assessing a student's faith to making sure it was the student’s knowledge of the RE Curriculum that we were assessing. Our sessions looked at greater class based activities and assessment tools to provide clear and straightforward assessment going forward.
Professional Development days are incredibly valuable to our staff and give us a much needed spark throughout the term to introduce new and outstanding ideas and teaching techniques to improve our practice and student outcomes. Religious Education is at our core here at St. Peter’s so it was even more special to reflect on the outstanding things we are already doing and the new ideas we can implement.

NEXT NEWSLETTER
Our next newsletter will be available at 3:00pm on Monday, 12th September.
National Child Protection Week (4-10 September)
National Child Protection Week is all about the ways that we can all work together to build communities that support children and families.
Children are safest when they are listened to, respected and believed.
All adults can play a part by ‘tuning in’ to children in everyday situations about small worries; then they are much more likely to feel comfortable telling us if something big is wrong.
Talking with children about safety:
-
Support children to identify trusted adults (both within the family and outside) they can talk to, if they are worried, upset, or don’t feel safe. Make sure these adults know they are on your child’s list.
-
Remind children that they can talk to you or a trusted adult about anything, no matter how big or small their worry might be.
-
Talk to children about how they know when they feel safe or unsafe. Help them to listen to their early warning signs (how their body feels), and to trust their feelings and instincts.
-
Use everyday activities as opportunities for conversations (e.g. preparing meals and snacks, going for walks, playing, shopping). If children are used to having lots of communication, it can make it easier to talk when big or tricky issues come up.
-
Be open to talking about all kinds of feelings, including anger, joy, frustration, fear and anxiety. This helps children to develop a ‘feelings vocabulary’.
National Child Protection Week is a great time to start conversations with children and families about feeling safe.
The website has posters, information, webinars, a section for children and lots of other useful resources. https://www.napcan.org.au/get-involved-2022/
At St Peter’s the safety and wellbeing of the children is our highest priority. Earlier in the year we updated all our Child Safe Policies to ensure we are compliant with the new National Standards. We are constantly reviewing what we do to ensure that our commitment to Child Safety is visible (ie: new signage around school).
It is also a great opportunity to have a conversation with our students around Child Safety and this week the SRC will discuss this and then go back to their classes for their thoughts an ideas.

Last week, the Year 3’s to 6 were welcomed to a Taiko Drumming incursion with Ayako-san. Taiko is a type of Japanese Drum made with wood and traditionally, cow skin. To hit the taiko, you take two bachi and hit the skin forcefully with the bachi. The sound was very loud, even with the softest hit of the drum. They were also mini-dances added at the end of some “performances”. Overall, this incursion was a pretty fun experience.

Last week was one of the best this year.
Last week we read the shortlisted books, they were good. On Friday we had the parade for book week and everyone dressed up as different characters from books. There were a lot of different costumes. I dressed up as Hermione, from Harry Potter, in her house colours.
Every year level walked a lap around Casey showing off their brilliant costumes.
Everyone was super excited and crazy. The teachers dressed up too and they looked great.
It was an incredible today!

Book week was on the Seventh week of Term Three. New books were read and activities were done, this was of course the theme of Dreaming with Eyes Open.
A jubilant parade was held on the 26th of August with glorious, bright hues of rainbow colours from costumes and the darkest of hues such as brown and black.
Book Week is a week to express our love of our favourite books. We know every book is special, with an abundance of creative ideas and unique imaginations. At the end it is also a great chance to cosplay as whatever character of our own choice.
During this special week, we did fun activities, read shortlisted books and had loads of fun. We are super lucky to celebrate book week

Last week was Book Week and it was SO fun. We dressed up as characters from books. I dressed up as Dreamy from the Care Bears and Karen dressed up as Mirabel from Encanto. We read lots of books. Including the Boy and Elephant, Iceberg and Blue Flower.
Our favourite books were Blue Flower, the lesson it was teaching is what makes you different makes you special, and what makes you special makes you different, and Walking in Gagudju Country. People dressed up as lots of things, our personal favourite costumes were the Mario and Luigi costumes. The whole week was so much fun.
We hope you got to celebrate!

Between the 21st - 26th of August was Book Week and on Friday, 26th, it all came to a climax at the Book Parade. We were happy to see all the smiling faces and amazing colourful costumes from our favourite books.
It was great to see all the parents who came to school to watch their children as they walked around Casey in their fun costumes. A special guest reader visited each level to read a shortlisted picture story book.
We give a special thank you to the staff members who did a great job of this. Make sure to keep reading and hope you had a bright and colourful Book Week!
