OPTIONAL SCHOOL DAY - Monday, 31st October
The Monday before the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday will be an Optional Day for students this year. With other professional learning commitments for staff during the year we are not able to take this day as a Pupil Free Day this year.
For this reason St Peter’s will be open on this day but school will be optional for students. Students who attend on this day will wear school uniform and depending on the numbers present be grouped in levels to complete school work for the day.
The first stage in our planning for this day is to determine how many students will be at school. To do this I ask you to complete the Operoo Form that will be shared with you today. In this form I am asking you to indicate whether your child/children will or will not be at school on this day. Alternatively you will be keeping your child at home. OSHC will not be open for before or after school if you do send your child to school.
If you have any queries regarding this day please email me at feedback@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au

PARISH EVENT - Gen Bryant and Her Team
If you have ever attended a school Mass with our amazing Drew Lane playing and singing you know what a difference powerful music makes. Drew has told me that “Gen Bryant is a vibrant, exciting and consummate singer-songwriter whose songs are contemporary and faith-filled. She appeals to all ages and speaks from the heart: to see her live in concert is a positive and affirming experience.”
These links will give you an insight into what you can expect if you attend this evening being organised by the Holy Trinity Parish.
Revive Our Hearts - GEN BRYANT & J.SANO
Send Us Out - Gen Bryant (Lyric Video)
I will definitely be attending and look forward to seeing St Peter’s families there.
PARENTS AND FRIENDS THANKYOU
I want to share my sincere appreciation for all the work that our Parents and Friends group are undertaking. There is a great deal occurring and their work benefits our students and community in so many ways. The upcoming Grandparents Mass and Morning Tea has a wonderful team of staff and parents with incredible support from so many families working together to bring this celebration back to St Peter’s. It is a highlight on our Calendar and has been badly missed. On the same night we have the Disco for our Foundation to Year Three students.
I also want to thank our Parents and Friends for approving funding to purchase a number of resources for use by our students.
- New Cubby for Foundation Playground - $2,500
- One new Indigenous Mat for Library - $550
- Five new Indigenous stools for Library - $400

SOLAR INSTALLATION
Throughout this year Andrea Crough, our Sustainability Leader, has continued her amazing work with our students on a number of projects that educate, and impact positively on our environment.
As part of this incredible work and in line with Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si and our school Master Plan we have made a significant investment of nearly $100,000 in Solar Panels to reduce our dependence on purchased electricity. The installation of these panels on the roof of the library and the hall began today and will continue over the next fortnight.
In upcoming newsletters we will share with you what impact this has had on our electricity use.
RESILIENT KIDS CONFERENCE
Thank you to the families who either attended the Resilient Kids Conference online or in person on the weekend. A recording of the session will be made available to all families who registered in the next few days.
As the event was all online last year due to covid , it’s been really great to see her artwork hanging in a gallery.
The piece below, ‘The Eye’, can be seen in the Glen Eira Town Hall Gallery until the end of October.

YEAR 6 EXCURSION TO THE BIG ISSUE
On Tuesday the 13th of September all the Year 6’s went on an excursion to the city. In the morning we all met up at Bentleigh Station. We then caught a train to Flinders Street Station. We walked straight to the Big Issue on Collins Street. We learnt about the Big Issue. Then there was a speaker who talked about his life and his struggles. It was very interesting and inspiring.
We also went to ACMI which is an exhibition that showed the evolution of Television, Cinema and Film. There were lots of costumes from famous movies like Thor Love and Thunder, Murial’s Wedding and Mad Max.
At lunchtime we went to Birrarung Marr and ate our lunch. After that, we went for our city walk. On our city walk we saw many cool attractions including walking through Hosier Lane. We took many photos and our favourite one was the one in front of Culture Kings.

Last Tuesday all the Year 6 students attended an excursion full of excitement to the MCG! The excitement grew as we got closer and finally arrived. We split ourselves up into 4 groups ready to learn and our 4 groups went with 4 different tour guides.
Graham was our tour guide for the day and he showed us around some interesting parts of the MCG including the grounds, the media room, the change rooms and many more astonishing and unique places. After that Georgia and I walked around the museum with a couple of friends and saw some interesting sights.
It was then time to meet the Olympian and we were guessing who it could be and when we walked through the room we found out it was Carrie Smith. Carrie Smith told us about her journey and how she became an Olympian. Eloise and I found her journey quite amazing, she has definitely inspired a fair few of us.
After the amazing talk with Carrie we walked over to the game room which was quite fun! We used sweatbands with codes to save our progress and show our parents when we got home.
Thanks for the amazing day teachers! We are so thankful.

On Tuesday, 4th of October all of the Year 6 students went on an excursion to the MCG. We learnt about so many cricket and afl historic moments. We walked around the stands, the change rooms and some lucky people got to sit in the press room chairs and pretend to be coaches. The tour guides were informative and told us about different players and records set at the G.
After our tour around the MCG we were taken to a room to listen to an Olympic sailor named Carrie Smith. Carrie talked to us about her journey to the 2016 Rio Olympics and her sailing career. She told us about the people she met and the benefits of being an olympian. We learned a lot about how much training goes into being a professional athlete. Carrie was incredibly kind and we thank her for giving up her time for us.
Then we went to the Sport Museum. There were so many interesting facts about cricket, athletics and AFL history. As we walked around we watched mini documentaries about one of the best cricket players in history, Shane Warne and 3x AFL Premiership player Bachar Houli. There were interactive exhibits and heaps of information.
Now to one of the best parts of our day, GAME ON! There were so many interactive games to play like cricket, rock climbing, AFL, basketball and many more. When we arrived at GAME ON we were given a green and yellow sweatband which we used to register our scores to their website.
Overall we had an amazing day at the MCG and we would like to say a massive thank you to all the teachers and parents that came along with us.

On Thursday, 6th October all the Year 5 Students headed down to Centenary Park to participate in a 2 Hour Long Walk to Water to raise money for South Sudan.
Comments from students on the walk:
WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY - ST PETER'S WORD WARRIORS
WABIAD 2022
September 15th was the day to await. We got to school extra early to represent St. Peter’s in the Write a Book in a Day competition, testing our writing skills to the best of our ability! We were one of 1565 teams competing for the prize. At the end of the day, we were doing this for Kids Cancer Research, that was the whole reason we volunteered! As a group, St. Peter’s raised $875 of $793,050 worth of total donations.
First thing in the morning, our team sat down and discussed the parameters. They were all over the place! These were; a chef, a plumber and a penguin. It was set in a maze and the objective was a failed test. We also had to include 5 words in our story. These words were delight, fresh, community, tiptoe and bruised.
We then all had time to individually brainstorm. We had 2 minutes and then we all shared our best ideas. After going over them, we put them all together and ended up with the most extravagant yet just plain weird story.
Everyone was extremely tired by the end of the long day, as we submitted our completed book by 7:50pm. Excitement ran through our veins, as those spare 10 minutes were all we needed. To be honest, it was shocking that 10 students could somehow write, illustrate and publish an entire book in a limit of 12 hours.
The entire book is in the hands of the judges, results awaiting. As November gets closer and closer, so does the chance that we, the Word Warriors could be the winners!
Every team member contributed as well as the assistance of teachers.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL GOOD NEIGHBOUR APPEAL
As part of the Year 5 Inquiry subject ‘Care for Kids’, the Year 5 students set an audacious goal to double the amount of food and toiletries collected for St Vincent De Paul.
Through class presentations and the awarding of red hearts, the collection built momentum. After roughly 2 weeks of collecting and counting, the school managed to collect over two thousand five hundred items.!
The students and the rest of the school were truly amazed by this achievement, and to make it even better, all of these items go to families in need. The families who are receiving the items are going to enjoy their Christmas. We would like to thank the teachers, parents and most importantly, the students for helping achieve our goal.
