COVID CASES
I have been notified of four positive cases this morning. An increase in recent one off reports. If your child shows symptoms of Covid please test them using the Rapid test we have provided. If they are positive please advise me at feedback@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au
STAFF CHANGES 2023
It is with mixed emotions that I advise you of staff changes for 2023. Sadness because these staff members will not be at St Peter’s in 2023 but joy for everything that next year holds for them.
After 22 years at St Peter’s Chris O’Brien 1CO has announced that she will be retiring at the end of this school year. Chris has had a long and exceptional career in Catholic Education and hundreds of St Peter’s children have had the privilege of being taught by her. Her retirement is not only a loss to St Peter’s but to all of education. We wish Chris all the best in the next amazing stage of her life.
Monica Bramich 5BR will be returning for two weeks at the beginning of Term One 2023 before she commences Parental Leave. We all excitedly await the arrival of baby Bramich in mid March. This is an amazing time in anyone’s life and we know that Monica will be an amazing mum and that she will be back at some time in the future.
Tricia Taylor, Learning Support Officer Senior School, has requested and been granted Long Service Leave in 2023 after twenty years at St Peter’s. We thank Tricia for all she does to assist the learning of so many students and wish her all the best for this time of leave.
PARISH BULLETIN
The information in the Parish Bulletin of the 19th / 20th of November regarding the land dispute is incredibly disappointing. Representatives of the Land Dispute P&F Committee and I met with leadership of MACS on the 9th of November. While components of that meeting were frustrating and disappointing, an olive branch was extended by the representatives of the Land Dispute committee with a meeting to be arranged by MACS leadership with all affected parties. The information in the Parish Bulletin is damaging to the intent of this meeting. MACS, and other relevant authorities will be informed of the contents of the Parish Bulletin. I will update the community when I have their advice.
CHILD SAFETY - FRONT CAR PARK
A near miss last week is a reminder that when dropping children via the front car park they should be escorted through the car park until they are safely able to enter the breezeway.
PARKING CHALLENGES DUE TO EARLY POLLING IN LIGHTHOUSE
I appreciate the frustration and danger that has been created by some of the visitors taking the opportunity to vote early. The danger is being created by drivers entering the front and staff car park ignoring exit only and no entry points. This has resulted in two accidents in the staff car park and a number of car park rage experiences. Thankfully none of these have involved school families or staff. The frustration is being caused by visitors parking inappropriately in these same car parks at school peak times. We are attempting to monitor visitors at peak times but I ask that all school drivers please be alert and keep yourselves and your children safe.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
With the crazy weather we are experiencing please be assured that children wearing part of their Winter Uniform ie long pants to stay warm is perfectly okay. Common sense must prevail. I do ask that students only wear their Sports Uniform on days they have Sport or PE.
BUILDER REQUIRED
I am in need of a builder to install a bank of windows in a wall to provide natural light to a storage space. If you are a builder or know of a builder who can quote and possibly complete this work for us please email me at principal@spbentleigheat.catholi.edu.au
MO DAY /WALKING STARS DAY
At the moment Mr. Cavarra and Mr. Joplin are growing some hideous moustaches to raise money for the Movember Foundation Charity. We also have Mrs Reaper, Mrs Ebden, Mr Mac, Miss Hunt, Mrs Mackey, Mrs McKillop, Mrs Pullan, Mrs Epstein, Silv, Sarah, Kreeya, Loretta Ballas and Louise Van Corler who will be doing a 21km Walking Stars Challenge to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Here at St. Peter’s we are going to join in the challenge. On Thursday, 24th of November we are asking all students and staff to wear something purple (socks, ribbon, hair ties - just a small accessory) and also wear a fake moustache. Students can either draw one on, wear a fake costume one or cut one out from paper. If you can, we would love it if you could bring along a gold coin donation. All money raised will be split and given to the 2 charities.
We would love it if everyone could take part on the day to raise money for these great causes.
STATE ELECTION
The Bishops of Victoria have provided an election guide designed to help Catholics consider and navigate key issues of significance, particularly those related to the common good. You are invited to read the information below and to prayerfully discern how your vote can contribute to the common good in Victoria.

YEAR 4 CAMP TO OASIS MT EVELYN
Oasis Camp is our first school camp for Year 4 children. We enjoyed the activities very much, but if we had to pick our favourite activities it would be Crate Climbing for Arianna because she got to go really high.
Tilly’s favourite activity was Candle Making because so many people put a lot of effort in their candles.
Sophia's favourite activity was candle making as well, because there was a lot of colour and you could be creative with it.
We went for a really fun walk at night, but it was super spooky. It was one of the best experiences we have ever had.
At the end of camp we all felt very upset that it was so short but we had the best first camp ever!
By Matilda Inkster, Sophia Batikas and Arianna Valis 4KG
Camp was really fun especially when we did all the activities! Like FLYING FOX. MY FAVOURITE!!
Other activities were Crate Climb, Reptile House, and Candle Making.
We had to sleep in our cabins. I had a bad sleep.
Next day, the hash browns for breakfast were very tasty. Then we got free time in the game room for 30 minutes. It was fun.
Then we packed up for the bus and went home. I enjoyed camp and I look forward to the next one.

Camp Oasis By 4MM
Year 4 Camp is at Oasis Mt Evelyn, there are 5 really fun activities: crate climbing, candle making, archery, flying fox and a reptile room.
You get split up into 5 groups by random and each group does each activity in a different order.
At the reptile room you get to hold a lizard and a snake. You get to touch a frog and a turtle.
At the flying fox you get to go on a zipline which is about 30-50 metres long. You get to go on it twice and you can do cool tricks such as going upside down, doing funny stances and much more but the weight limit is 95kg.
At archery you get to learn how to shoot an arrow at a target and you get to shoot 3 arrows each turn and you get 2 turns.
At candle making you get a little string with a knot on the end of it, you have to have the knot facing down. You dip your string into some wax for 2 seconds then let it drip for a second then you put it in water for 2 seconds then you wipe it and then repeat. Once it gets to the thickness of your pinky you can curve it but if you want it straight then you wait till it’s as thick a your thumb then you dip it into a different coloured wax then once you're happy you cut a bit of the end to make it stand up by itself.
At crate climbing you get to stand on a hole in the crate then you get another one then you stack them. Once you fall there will be someone holding a rope so you don’t fall straight to the ground then they will let a bit of the rope go at a time so you go down slowly.
For food after your first 2 activities you get a bit of fruit to eat then you continue on your final activity for the day. For dinner you get tacos and dessert. For breakfast you get eggs and hash browns. For lunch on the final day you get pizza.
That’s what you get at Oasis Camp at Mt Evelyn.

Camp Oasis is a calm, relaxing place to stay that teaches you how to do archery, candle making, team challenges and a massive zipline, you also get to hold reptiles. We highly recommend it for your next camp!
Archery - We did Archery with Mr Mac. We got two turns and three arrows to try to shoot in the bullseye. There was a hard wire that you had to pull to get on the board.
Crate Climbing - You got attached to a harness so when all your crates fell you wouldn’t hurt yourself. Your partner gave you the crates and you had to try to get to as high as you can. When it gets higher you have to use a large stick then you swap turns.
Flying Fox - A man helps you get attached to your harness and then put your helmet on then he gives you a number. When your number is called you go up the stairs to a little cob then he double checks everything is fine then you can go.
Candle Making - There was a lady who gave you a wick and then there were two pots in front of you which had water and wax. Then kept dipping your wax and swapping colours till you were happy with your candle.
Reptile Room - In the Reptile Room you could go around and look at all the animals in their cage, then we sat in a circle and got to see and touch and even hold the reptiles.

On the 10th of November all of the Year 4 students went to the Oasis Camp in Mt Evelyn. When we got there we did a scavenger hunt to get to know the camp and then had lunch while Mr Mac told us who was in our cabins.
Our first activity was archery/team challenges. We each got 6 shots where you try to hit the bullseye. The team challenges were things that you had to complete as a team. There were 2 challenges, one of them you had to try and balance the balance scale.
The second activity was candle making. You had to dip the wick in the wax really fast then dip it in water for 2 seconds then wipe the water off the wick.
The third activity was the crate stacking. You had to stack crates and try to stack the most crates without falling. You try to get over 10.
After that we had dinner which was tacos and ice cream which was yummy! Then we did a night walk. It was interesting listening to the birds and nature.
Then we went back to our cabins and went to bed. The next day we had breakfast which was scrambled eggs, hash browns and cereal.
The first activity of the day was the flying fox. The flying fox went across the oval. It went very fast. You could do tricks on it.
The last activity was the reptile house. We got to pat and hold reptiles.
Then we had pizza for lunch and headed home.

The Oasis Camp is AMAZING for all ages.
The Camp people tell you all about the camp and where everything is. The best thing about this camp is that the food is amazing so you won't need to worry about the food.
The cabins are good too, you have a shower and toilet in your cabin. So in the night you don't need to walk outside and get bitten by mozzies.
There is a dining room, navigations, a games room and a big GYM.
The best things about the Oasis Camp is that there is a FLYING FOX WHERE YOU CAN GO UPSIDE DOWN, CANDLE MAKING which is really peaceful a reptile house where you can hold reptiles, even turtles and a snake called sushi, crate climbing and Archery.
Archery is when you shoot an arrow onto a target. It is ok if you are a lefty, you can still do it, they have a special bow.
Crate Climbing is where you stack crates and step in the sides of them. Once you hit 10 it starts wobbling a lot but if you're putting your weight on the top corners you should be fine but there is someone holding you if you do fall.

Our Camp Experience by Jack Logan And Andrew Terkelsen
Hi I’m Jack and this is Andrew and we are here to talk about camp.
On Thursday, 10th November, Year 4 went to Oasis Camp in Mount Evelyn for fun activities and good times. First we would like to talk about the food. We can assure you that all of Year Four loved the food at camp. Every meal was like a party in our mouth. The meals were tacos, scrambled eggs and pizza. Just to name a few.
But we want to talk about the activities too, one of them was the reptile house where we got to hold a range of animals from frogs to pythons, lizards to turtles. The reptile house has something for everyone.
Next was candle making which people made of all types of shapes and sizes. The colours were out of this world!
After that was archery where the arrows met the board, well that was for some people. It was really fun and we loved it.
For crate climbing we both took on the job of holding people up and when we finally got our go I got 9 crates and Andrew got 8 crates.
After that was THE FLYING FOX which was terrible if you're scared of heights but truly amazing. We thought it would go slow but it was speedy!
Overall camp was an amazing experience for everyone.
Thanks for listening!
The whole of Year 4 was buzzing, we were going to camp! After waiting year after year after year! It was finally our turn to go to a camp called Oasis in Mount Evelyn.
Once we arrived at school we took our bags to the Prep playground. We waited and waited for the bell to go. Once it did we walked up the stairs to our classroom. We took the roll and then we went and waited on the Prep playground and once the second bus arrived we set off! The drive took around 45 minutes and had finally come to an end.
We took all the bags into the gym and listened to one of the Staff Members, Steph.
She explained the rules then we had a scavenger hunt for some photos. It was really cute and a great way to get to know the place! They organised us into our cabins. We were told who was in our cabin and what group we would have over the 2 days. There were 5 activities plus a night walk.
The night walk was super fun!
The activities were candle making, crate climbing, flying fox, reptile house and lastly archery.
First we would like to announce who made sixteen to fifteen cartes that we know of were… Lily Deledio made 16 crates Scarlett Bloomfield made 15 crates and Chloe McDowall made 16. For those who didn't make 15 or 16 we would like to let you know you did amazing anyways!
Another little notice is Lily Deledio and Olivia Bonnici are now called main marian's by Mr. Kendall because Lily hit 4 bullseyes and the rest of her shots were an outer bull and Olivia made 3 mistakes then after that BOOM she didn't miss a shot.
Now for dinner we had tacos and for dessert we had ice cream. It was delicious!!
After dinner we went on that night walk we talked about then we went to bed! The next day we had hash browns and eggs or cereal. After that we had moved on to the rest of the activities.
When they were all done we had pizza for lunch and then it was time to go. Sad enough it was over but we had fun!!
We will always remember YEAR 4 CAMP OASIS!!

YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO SCIENCEWORKS & PLANETARIUM
Aren’t excursions great? They are so much fun, interesting, and exciting. We just love them.
We really enjoyed the bus trip because we could chat endlessly which we are not allowed to do at school. The bus driver was very patient and didn’t seem to mind our chattering. Unfortunately, some people felt a bit motion sick. Luckily, no-one vomited.
In the lightning room we saw replica lightning. The teacher, Nina, had a great sense of humour which made it very entertaining. There was a backstage person who had all the rotten jobs. Monty was chosen to look like Micky Mouse. The teacher created negative and positive energy which made balloons stick to his hair.
Amazingly enough, we all beat Cathy Freeman when we raced her in the general viewing area. Well, maybe not, but most of us tried. There was a very cool thing where we could make our own character called Build Your Future You . We also saw a hand- controlled video game whereby you had to keep the jet in the tunnel.
At the Planetarium the presenter (we can’t remember his name) showed us the night sky with the various constellations, the Milky Way and many stars and planets. We also watched a short film called Tycho goes to Mars, which told us a bit about Mars and the robot, Opportunity Rover. Quite a few of us felt motion sick when the roof spun around.
We love excursions because we get to explore, learn, and enjoy different experiences. We wish we could have more excursions.

Finally I can hop on the bus to Scienceworks. I have been waiting a long time for this day to come. All of Year Two have been waiting for this. We were so excited!
Firstly we went to the lightning room to learn about electricity and lightning. We learned Van De graff generators, and we got to see Nellie’s hair stand up. It was awesome. Then we learnt about positive and negative energy. Hamish and I got to be the special volunteers. After that the lady rubbed some water balloons on Monty's hair and it started to stick. At the end of the show we saw how to survive in lightning.
Secondly we went to the sports section. I raced Cathy Freeman with a friend. Next I had a go on the virtual goalie activity. There was also a cricket machine that could tell if the ball was out or in. We also got to see how hard a cricket ball was, it was crazy how hard it was. The sports section was so much fun it was definitely my favourite thing of the day.
Lastly we went to the Planetarium. We watched Tyco Goes to Mars. After that we got to see the night sky and do some stargazing. We learnt all about the different constellations. I started to feel sick from all the spinning and some people were feeling super tired because it was so dark.
It was a fun Monday. I wish we could go to Scienceworks every Monday.

Boom! Boom! Boom! went the lightning, it was exhilarating!
The room we were in was the Lightning Room, it sounded so cool and it was. Year 2 got to see how to make positive and negative energy. It was really fun, we also got to see how to complete a circuit. Now for the really fun part…the lightning!
We had to block our ears because it was really loud!
Secondly, Year 2 went to the Historical area. There was a lot of old stuff which is there for people who weren’t around back then to view. Year 2 saw lots of engineering items, we saw old cars and telephones.
Next, Year 2 went to the Sports Room. We got to race Cathy Freeman, do a wheelchair race, climb a rock wall and many other things! It was a great experience!
Lastly, Year 2 went to the…Planetarium! There we saw a movie called Tycho Goes to Mars. Some people got a little dizzy but apart from that it was awesome!!! After the movie, we saw what the star symbols were and the planets and lastly, the Milky Way, it was cool!
My favourite part was the Lightning Room but all of it was amazing!
By Sophie Martin 2OG
Bzzzz, Zap, Bang! Lightning exploded! When it hit the big plane I nearly had a heart attack! The lightning went down to the car with the big wheels. Then it went across to a person dangerously waving a gold club. He got struck and the lightning went through his whole body. The girl hiding under the bus shelter got electrocuted too. That showed us how we can to try to be saved when there is lightning around us.
Sportsworks was next. We all rushed to see how fast, strong and fit we were. I got to see how many kilograms I could lift. Then I got to race with Cathy Freeman. I pressed the buzzer to start, 5,4,3,2,1 Boom! the race started I beat her by a second, I couldn’t believe it, maybe I started just little before her…
Next, was the amazing Planetarium. We got to watch the movie, Tycho Goes to Mars. It was so funny. After that we learnt about the Milky Way, Planets and the constellations in the Melbourne sky at night. It was very interesting.
We are so lucky that we got to do all that in one excursion.

WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY COMPETITION - WINNERS
St Peter’s entered a team of ten writers (four boys and six girls) from Year Six in the Write A Book In a Day initiative. The expectation is that the team writes a book collaboratively, working within set parameters, in a twelve hour period. On 15th September, our team began at 8:00am and worked through until almost 8:00pm and produced a book called A Chef Showdown, an amazing effort. What talented writers and illustrators they are.
All the stories are uploaded to an online library and shared with sick children in hospitals. This is reward in itself. The registration money paid for all the teams and any team sponsorship goes towards vital funds for research into a cure for childhood cancers. This year almost $800, 000 has been raised. How fantastic an intiiative this is.
On Wedesday, 9th November, the team gathered together to view the announcement of the winners. We had been notified earlier that the book had been short-listed to the top ten. It was with squeals of joy and pride that the team were informed that their book was the winning story for the Vic, Tas and SA states division for primary schools. What talented writers and illustrators they are.
A huge congratulations to George Batzaxis, Laurence Bloomfield, Alice Eyles, Millie Lane, David Lo Schiavo, Frederick Khoo, Millie Natoli, Alexandra Pantelios, Chelsea Reneaux and Gemma Roach for this amazing achievement.
Two from two St Peter’s!!!! (We have entered for the past two years and won both times.)
