UNIFORM REMINDERS
Congratulations to the families who ensure their children are always wearing the correct uniform to school. Correct uniform ensures that we are presenting ourselves well at school and coming to and from school. A few students have been wearing alternatives to our uniform and I would like your support in ensuring all children are in the correct uniform every day.
Beanies - On the cold mornings where children wish to wear a beanie, it is the St Peter’s Beanie they are required to wear. These can be purchased from our Uniform supplier PSW or from our front office for $14.00. Footy beanies can only be worn on Monday mornings if your child's team wins.
Sports Uniform - Sports Uniform can only be worn on days when students have PE, are competing in sports events or are training for school sports events.
Sports Socks - White socks without any emblems / writing (apart from the St Peter’s emblem) are to be worn with sports uniform. St Peter’s socks can be purchased from our uniform supplier.
Jackets - On cold days students can wear jackets over the top of St Peter's jackets on their way to school. They cannot be worn instead of the St Peter’s jacket.
SMART WATCHES
With many smart watches able to take photos, send texts and even make calls I have asked Chris Joplin our ICT leaders to visit all classes and check all smart watches. In line with our Mobile Phone / Smart Watch Policy shared with you in the last newsletter of Term 2, I have asked him to ensure children are only wearing the following:
-
Smart Watches which have had all communication features (text, phone calls, social media and wifi communication) disabled as well as cameras disabled.
In line with our policies Smart watches without these features disabled will be sent home and not be allowed back to school until the features have been removed.
Please go to the link below to view the policy.

PREP HAIR CUT - Congratulations Stella Lawless Prep SH
Stella Lawless in Prep SH decided that she wanted to get her hair cut and donate her hair to the people who make wigs for sick children.
Her mum talked to her a while ago about donating her hair, so Saturday, the 27th of July was the day Stella decided it would happen. Stella’s hair is being sent to the Alopecia Foundation who provide wigs to children who have lost their hair to cancer treatment, Alopecia and other illnesses.
GRANDPARENTS / SPECIAL FRIEND DAY
Congratulations to everyone on a wonderful celebration of these very special people in our lives. Days like this take a lot of planning and organisation.
On behalf of everyone who enjoyed this day I would like to thank Mick Schinck, Ed Dooley, Drew Lane and Fr Jacob for organising and celebrating our Mass, our Parents and Friends who organised and served morning tea for all of our guests and finally our teachers and support staff who organised activities for our guests to participate in with the students.
This is a very special day full of smiles. It was particularly for special day for John Schreurs who returned to St Peter's 64 years after he was a pupil at St Peter's in 1955 to share the day with his Granddaughter Alexandra in Prep SH.
Thank you for everyone's wonderful contribution of food to this very special day in our School Calendar.
We have a number of Platters in the School Office from the morning. Please come to the Office if one of these belongs to you.
Thank you to all of the families who have contributed recipes to the St Peter's Family Cookbook. We have received a wide range of delicious recipes and are currently in the midst of sorting, formatting and photographing to design our community cookbook.
In order to make it as inclusive and polished as possible we have decided to make it a two-year project, aiming for release mid 2020. Next year’s new Prep families will have an opportunity to contribute and Year 6 families leaving the school this year will be kept informed of the book’s progress and ordering opportunities throughout.
Don't worry if you haven’t had a chance to contribute a recipe yet. Once we finish assessing what recipes we currently have, there will be another opportunity to submit a recipe. Keep reading our cookbook updates as we will be sharing photos and snippets - and watch out for an exciting competition with great prizes coming your way next month!
We look forward to creating something the school community can be proud of and celebrating the rich diversity of families and their food at St Peter’s.
Along with the newsletter, keep up to date with progress by following the St Peter's Instagram or P&F Facebook account, (link below).

MONASH UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR EX STUDENT LUCAS SARGIOTIS
An ex student of St Peter’s, Lucas Sargiotis, brother of Nia 5PH and Catya 2AC been awarded the Monash University Leadership Award for the month of June.
Lucas has gone above and beyond at the St Peter’s Football Club this season, not only playing in the Under 17 side, but also helping the Auskickers on Saturday mornings.
“I felt pretty rewarded that I’ve accomplished something by helping out with the Juniors and helping out with the Auskick at Centenary Park on a Saturday morning,” Lucas said.
“I’ve just helped them with a few pointers here and there… helping them perfect their skills so hopefully one day they can be AFL footballers.”
Lucas is setting the example of leadership for his peers and indeed the whole of St Peter's Football Club and school communities.
“(A good leader is) someone who’s persistent in their endeavours to try and help their club and help other people strive for their goals,” he said.
He said the sense of community at St Peter's Football Club was one of the best things about playing football.
“The sense of being one big family, we all look after each other on the field and off the field. It’s really good here.”
Congratulations to the following students on celebrating their Reconciliation over the weekend: Grayson Cooper, Chelsea Reneaux, Jamie Brown, Lincoln Leversha, Xavier Brodrick, Joseph Ricaldone
WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO DO?
We can all act this way if we choose to. A world of love, care, nurture and joy is possible. But for this to happen we all need to choose to live this way. Read this beautiful story and it may help you to continue to choose the path of love.
Edward Dooley (Mission and Faith)
_______________________________________________________________________________
What would you do? You make the choice! Don't look for a punch line -
There isn't one! Read it anyway.
The question is: Would you have made the same choice?
At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.
After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: "When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do.
Where is the natural order of things in my son?" The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. "I believe that when a child like Shay, physically and mentally handicapped comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child."
Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, "Do you think they'll let me play?"
Shay's father knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but the father also understood that if his son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his disabilities.
Shay's father approached one of the boys on the field and asked if Shay could play, not expecting much. The boy looked around for guidance and a few boys nodded approval, why not? So he took matters into his own hands and said, "We're losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning.
I guess he can be on our team and we'll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning."
Shay struggled over to the team's bench put on a team shirt with a broad smile and his Father had a small tear in his eye and warmth in his heart.
The boys saw the father's joy at his son being accepted.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay's team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as his father waved to him from the stands.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay's team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat.
At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game?
Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible 'cause Shay didn't even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing the other team putting winning aside for this moment in Shay's life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least be able to make contact.
The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay as the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher.
The game would now be over, but the pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game.
Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the head of the first baseman, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, "Shay, run to first! Run to first!" Never in his life had Shay ever ran that far but made it to first base.
He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, "Run to second, run to second!" Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to second base.
By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball, the smallest guy on their team, who had a chance to be the hero for his team for the first time. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher's intentions and he too intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman's head.
Shay ran toward second base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, "Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay"
Shay reached second base, the opposing shortstop ran to help him and turned him in the direction of third base, and shouted, "Run to third!
Shay, run to third"
As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams and those watching were on their feet were screaming, "Shay, run home!"
Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the "grand slam" and won the game for his team.
That day," said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world."
Shay didn't make it to another summer and died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making his Father so happy and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day!
Read LessPeer Support Program – Term 3
We continued our Peer Support lessons last Friday. On Friday the students identified their own personal strengths and discussed how they can use these personal strengths to support themselves and others to develop resilience. You might like to ask your child what they think their personal strengths are – you might be able to suggest some other strengths they haven’t thought of! This week students will think about the way in which relationships develop over time, and how trust and honesty can change a relationship.
Bucket Filler Award
The first Bucket Filler Award for Term 3 was awarded to Max Matthews in 5GM for 'being kind and supportive and always helping other'. Max will proudly display the Bucket Filler trophy in his classroom until our next assembly.
Ride/Walk 2 School
Congratulations to the winners of the Junior and Senior Ride/Walk 2 School trophies….

Thank you to all St Peter’s families for your generosity! The amount of money raised for Camp Quality will be announced at our next assembly and included in our next newsletter.
Wow! What an amazing excursion!
Last Thursday, 1st of August, Year Two went to Chadstone to visit Legoland.
Jake Baratta entered a competition, he won first prize!.His prize was for the whole year level was to visit Legoland. Also as part of the prize, Legomaster David made a model of the St Peter’s School. It is incredible and we can’t wait to reveal it at school later this term. As part of the model all the children in 2AC got to make themselves as a Lego Mini Figure to put on the school playground.
While we were there we got lots of time for free play. Our favourite things to do were; the Harry Potter Ride where you had to peddle to make the ride go higher. The Kingdom’s Quest Ride, where you had to shoot the evil people who had kidnapped the princess. We all got to go together into the 4D cinema and watch the Ninjago “Master of the 4th Dimension” movie. During the movie we all got wet from the rain!
We were lucky enough to have a Lego lesson with David and Oceanana where we created a scene for a narrative that we are going to write.
We had the best excursion ever!!
On Tuesday the 23rd of July St Peter's competed in Beachside Division Girls Netball Finals at the Albert Park Netball centre. Meg, Michelle, Emma, Keiva, Rachel, Eloise, Emily, Issy and Maddie competed against 5 other schools - Loretto, St Michael's, St Joan of Arc, Port Melbourne Primary and Elwood Primary.
We won 2 out of the five games, played really well, and in two of the games we lost by only 2 points.
Everyone played amazing games and we played really well together. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Gibson for being there for the whole journey and for supporting us the whole way.
Congratulations to everyone who participated on that special day.

FATHER'S DAY BREAKFAST - Friday, 6th September
Sally Maher and Kate Smith are again coordinating the very popular Father's Day Breakfast which will be held the Friday after Father's Day. As this is both Sally's and Kate's final year at St Peter's, we are looking for volunteers to be involved in coordinating next year's breakfast. Shadowing Sally and Kate on the day would be a great idea to get a feel for the coordination of the event without being thrown into the deep end! It would be great to get some new parents on board so if you are interested, please contact Katrina Dimitriu on pnf1@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au for further information.

ST. PETER'S FOODBANK
Thank you to all the volunteers that have cooked for us in the past few weeks.
St. Peter’s Primary School Food Bank was established in 2013 with families volunteering to cook meals for other families in the school community during a time of need. Whether there is illness, hospitalisation of a family member, bereavement, the arrival of a new baby, moving house or even if someone is in need of a little extra TLC, the Food Bank can help.
We would like to invite parents to consider becoming one of our volunteer cooks. We anticipate each volunteer would only be required to cook 2-3 times per year. Of course, you are welcome to cook more often if you like.
We also encourage you to think about your friends and classmates at the school and keep the Food Bank in mind if they are going through a tough time. It is a completely confidential service and you can access it through us or through a staff member at St. Peter’s. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, please download our electronic brochure below.
We are looking for some new parents to sign up as volunteers to start cooking for our Food Bank. We love to have as many volunteers in our Food Bank pool as possible.
If you have not cooked for our Food Bank before, please ensure you email us prior to cooking, at sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au, and ask us for a Food Bank information pack.
If you become aware of someone in the school community needing a little help or TLC, please contact us. You can contact us confidentially at: sppsfoodbank@spbentleigheast.catholic.edu.au or call Karina Clement 0404 057 522 or Katrina Chapman 0488 386 088 (Program Co-ordinators) or your class teacher, school office or Michael Hanney directly.
