Yesterday was the Feast of Pentecost and some of our Year Six students received the Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Tony Ireland. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate this Sacrament on the Feast of Pentecost. In my personal prayers before Mass began I prayed this prayer for all members of our St Peter’s community.
It was a rainy afternoon at St Peter’s Church and everyone was looking absolutely fabulous. Families, friends and sponsors arrived to support all of the children making their Confirmation.
To start off the Mass a group of confident Confirmation Candidates read beautifully at the lectern. Soon after, the Confirmation candidates walked quietly up to the altar and received the gift of Confirmation as Bishop Tony marked a cross on their foreheads.
Students, teachers, families, friends and sponsors all sang joyfully as we took a group photo. Some candidates took individual photos with Bishop Tony. Everyone celebrated this cold wintery afternoon with family and friends doing something special.

STATE BUDGET
In last week’s state budget the Treasurer announced a change in payroll tax that will impact on a number of Catholic Secondary Schools. The extent of this impact is yet to be determined. The Director of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) has emailed all schools and the Director of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) has issued a press release (see below). I will keep you informed of what action MACS and CECV will be taking. The change does not impact St Peter’s school fees.
FRONT CAR PARK
A reminder that the speed limit in the front car park is 5 kmh ie walking pace. This will ensure the safety of our students, your children. If you have other family members picking up children please pass this message on.
SOLAR PANELS
Following the installation of our Solar Panels we have been tracking our Electricity use and its impact on the environment. When we compare our greenhouse gas emissions from our 2023 April bill to our 2022 April bill we have halved our Greenhouse gas emissions. This is a positive step in our plan to reduce our environmental footprint.
NATIONAL SCHOOL REFORM AGREEMENT
The Federal Government has released a survey as part of the review of the next National School Reform Agreement. They want to hear from parents, teachers and students to help shape the future of school education. The survey is open from now until June 23. I have been asked to share this link to our school community to make sure your voices are represented.
Enrolments for Foundation (Prep) in 2024 have opened. If you know of neighbours or friends who have a child starting school in 2024 please ask them to call the School to book a School Tour.
Current families with children already at St Peter’s that have a child starting Foundation in 2024 can access an Enrolment Information Pack from the School Office.
A large group gathered for the last mum’s catch up. The next night will be Thursday, 13th July. Put the date in your calendar. Further details will follow closer to the date.

YEAR 1 WILDLIFE EXPOSURE IN SCHOOL ACTIVITY
On Wednesday, Charli brought in animals. Charli brought a freshwater crocodile, an olive python, a barking owl, a blue tongue lizard, a potoroo, a bearded dragon and a spotted python. We patted the potoroo. It was soft. The bearded dragon was spikey. The barking owl turned it's head. The olive python can go to 8 foot long. The blue tongue lizard can confuse other animals.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
On Wednesday, 24th May at 11.00am, schools across Australia took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime. 2OP had Ella and Amelia from Year 6 to come and read 'The Speedy Sloth' by Rebecca Young.
This story is about a Sloth named Spike who trains every day to prepare for a race. The day of the race finally came and Spike was so excited. Sadly Spike came last but he didn't care because she tried her hardest.
We got to do an activity. It was a Sloth holding a book about the story and we got to rate it out of five stars. We got to describe what happened in the story and decorated the Sloth activity. We loved the story so much!.
Thanks to the Year Sixes who gave us the book to keep in our clasroom.

YEAR 4 EXCURSION TO SALESIAN COLLEGE
On Friday, 26th May, the Year Four’s were lucky enough to have a day at Salesian College in Chadstone. When we first left school we were very excited. On arrival, the Principal, Mr Ashmore, welcomed us and we had our group photo taken. After that we split into three groups and rotated through the activities.
Beginning with games in the massive hall, we played an awesome game of Newcomb Ball. We noticed lots of pendants hanging around the hall, which was the oldest part of Salesian.
We also enjoyed an Art lesson, making plasticine models, based on Monsters Inc.
However our favourite experience was the Science Lab. We examined bugs on gum leaves, looking through a digital microscope, it was definitely something St Peter’s doesn’t have in our Science lessons. You couldn’t even see the bugs with your naked eye, but on the screen they were so enlarged and so vivid and clear.
The very best activity was watching the Science teacher make Elephant’s Toothpaste; the chemical reactions were amazing. Another fabulous activity was seeing the elements of potassium, copper, salt and strontium light up in the bunsen burner; that was super exciting!
Lunchtime entertainment was one of the school’s bands; an ensemble of wind and brass instruments, guitars and percussion. We enjoyed dancing to the music!
We also learnt that the Salesian Brothers follow in the footsteps of their hero, St Dom Bosco, an Italian Saint.
Overall, our day at Salesian was really fun and exciting.
It looks like a great school and we would recommend it for the St Peter’s boys.

Bebras Challenge Champions
At the beginning of Term 2 a number of students participated in the Bebras Challenge. The Bebras Challenge is an online competition run by the CSIRO that engages students with computational thinking. There are 15 problems and students have 45 min - an hour to solve these.
St Peter's received the results last week and we are pleased to announce that we performed really well as a whole.
We are also very excited to announce that 9 students received a High Distinction meaning they only got one question wrong.
Congratulations and Well done to all those who got a High Distinction:
Eleni Sardellis, Isabel Bonnici, Aarav Kurien, Noah Lentine, Robert Koenig, Beckett Cooper, Shivvy Patel, Lachlan Webb, Woun-Hao Tan
- We are also exceptionally excited to announce that 3 Year 4 girls, Shania Dawson, Paige Reneaux and Anushree Karandikar received an Honour Certificate because they got 100% AMAZING EFFORT!!!
Paige
We are so surprised that we got the Honour Roll. When we did not get a high distinction we all thought that we did not get a good award. I am very happy that all of our friends and family helped us through the way and supported us at assembly. We practised a lot and worked really hard. I was so happy when I walked up on stage. At first I had no idea why our parents were here sitting in the audience. I thought they were here to watch the assembly and see what we got. It was so amazing we did not even think it was real. It was one of the best feelings in my entire life.
Anu
Our parents were supporting us when we were practising this challenge. When we heard our names we were so excited. It was the best feeling we ever had in our life. I was really glad that I had practised a lot over the days. I felt so proud of myself. This is the best thing that has ever happened. It was very difficult while we were doing it but we got through it.
Shania
We were extremely happy when we heard our names being called out for the Honour Roll. We all thought we didn't do that good when our names were not called out for the High Distinction. When I heard our names I was so surprised. It felt so amazing when I was standing up there in front of the whole school and my family and friends, being cheered on. We practised a lot at home every day together with the help of my family and friends. I couldn't believe it. It was a great moment!
Altogether
We all want to congratulate the students who got the High Distinction, they did really well. We all want to thank our parents and siblings for helping us and supporting us. We also want to thank our friends who supported us and encouraged us on the way and our teachers who taught us and helped us. Without them all we couldn't have done it. We give a huge shout to them all.
Early in the morning on Tuesday, 16th of May it was pouring outside. We were all worried that the cross country competition would be cancelled! However, when the selected students from Years 3-6 arrived at Bald Hill Park to compete in the District Cross Country, the rain had stopped, the wind had arrived and we were all shivering.
When the 9/10 year olds race started they had to run 2km and we were all screaming our hearts out until we lost our voices. Next race was the 11 year olds who ran 3 kilometres.
When it came to the 12/13 year old races it was so windy if we jumped we would have been blown away. Before our races we needed to quadruple knot our shoes because we had to run 3 kilometres!
The results were that St Peter’s came 3rd overall and the 9/10 boys came runners up for their division! Special shout out to the students that made it to the next division!
It was a good day but very tiring and everyone had a lot of fun.
