MICHAEL JULIFF’S RETIREMENT
With a combination of joy and sadness I have accepted Michael Juliff’s resignation as he moves to the next stage of his life in retirement. Joy, that he will have a wonderful time ahead with family and friends and sadness that Catholic Education farewells an inspirational leader. I will speak of Michael in the next newsletter. Please find below Michael’s farewell message to our community.
MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL JULIFF
Dear Families,
I was appointed Principal of St Peter’s in 2006 and for 10 years I was able to lead and work in this wonderful community. In 2015 our three parish schools (St Peter’s, St Paul’s and St Catherine’s) began a Federated Leadership model to improve student outcomes and to support Principal Wellbeing. This model established a Co-ordinating Principal working across the three schools to free up time for the Principals to focus on School Improvement rather than compliance and governance, which became the responsibility of the Co-ordinating Principal. I was fortunate to have 6 years as the Co-Ordinating Principal and along with the three Principals and our Mission and Faith Leader we created a very successful leadership model, that enhanced our 3 communities.
Unfortunately the powers that be were not supportive of the model and MACS did not continue it beyond 2021. As a result of this decision I was provided with an opportunity to transition to retirement by becoming the Director of Child Safety and Compliance at St Peter’s and St Paul’s. I have taken long service leave these last two terms to reflect on my future. Having become a grandfather last year and realising the toll 24 years of Principalship has taken I have decided to officially retire on the 23rd of June.
I have been privileged to be involved in Catholic Education for 43 years and I will take with me many treasured memories. My 17 years involved at St Peter’s has been wonderful. Father Michael Sierakowski appointed me and I was welcomed into a vibrant and welcoming parish community. St Peter’s was a strong presence in the wider community and this continues today with the school now creating that community of welcome.
After being a principal of a school and a new person is appointed to ‘your school’ you want them to build on the foundations that have been laid. God was looking after St Peter’s when we appointed Michael Hanney to the role of Principal. Michael is such a man of integrity, a wonderful educationalist, who works tirelessly for the children and families. St Peter’s has certainly flourished under Michael’s leadership. I would like to thank and acknowledge his amazing work and know that all in the school community will continue to support him in what is a tough job some days.
I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful staff at St Peter’s I have worked with over the years. I have never worked in a school where staff are so willing to go ‘above and beyond’ for the children in their care. As families you are blessed to have such dedicated professionals looking after your children.
Lastly to all families I thank you for the support that was always given to me and I urge you to be involved in what is a vibrant and welcoming school community. I also thank you for the trust you give us every single day when you allow us to educate and nurture the most precious people in the world – your children – St Peter’s children are wonderful and I take with me so many proud moments that they gave me.
So – Goodbye, Farewell and Amen.
With best wishes
Michael Juliff

YEAR 5 EXCURSION TO RIPPON LEA ESTATE
5HU & 5PC
On Wednesday the 30th of May 5HU and 5PC arrived at Rippon Lea Estate for an excursion. The Rippon Lea Estate is a beautiful historical mansion with a picture-perfect lake and huge gardens. The lovely Sandra and Bronwen were our guides for the activities. The activities that we did were the mansion tour, the creature catches scavenger hunt, the servant training and the final one was the 19th century games. We were split up into 4 groups and the teachers were provided with timetables about the day.
One of the activities was the tour of the mansion. It was so much fun as we pretended we were rich children from the 1800s. Sandra gave us a wealthy person’s name and told us that the Sargoods had 12 children and 35 servants! Mr and Mrs Sargood were the first owners of the house which they built in the 1800’s. The set up of the table was very different to what we do these days. Back then, going to dinner at a young age was known as a luxury. Four beds in one bedroom was known as a privilege but nowadays we usually have one or two beds in a bedroom.
The creature catches scavenger hunt was really exciting as we went around the grounds. We didn’t make it to all 18 acres of it, though back in the day it was 45! We looked for posts that when we opened them up there was a drawing of an animal that we had to rub over in crayon. We had a great time in the bird avery and in the tower where the steps were so tight.
Next we learned to be servants. Some groups got different names and while doing this activity we learned how to use old fashioned irons and vacuums. Another benefit from this was learning how to do washing in the 1800’s.
19th century games were old fashioned activities which included: croquet, a stick and ball game invented in the 1300’s; hot potato, a classic that is played all around the world; skipping, another classic that the twelve Sargood children would play for entertainment; and sack races, a race of people hopping around in a sack.
Learning facts like this and many others really made us feel like we were a part of history. We were so lucky to spend the day at such a beautiful and historical location. This was a great experience and the Year 5’s of St Peter's would definitely recommend a day trip to this amazing piece of history.

Introduction
The Year 5’s went to Ripponlea for an Excursion. There were 4 activities. We split up into 4 groups and we had 2 leaders from the National Trust…Mimi and Bronwen and they were with us for the whole excursion. They told us all about Mrs Sargood and Mr Sargood and their 12 children, they also had 35 servants. The servants were kept very busy all the time!
Servant Training:
Our first activity was servant training. It was so much fun. First, we learnt how to wash the clothes using a washing board, water and we used a mangle. Then Mimi, the leader, showed us the different irons from the 1800’s. Mimi showed us the kitchen where the servants used to cook the food. After that, Mimi showed us the different machines the servants used to use in the 1800s. She showed us the different parts of the servants area. The last thing we did was smack a rug hanging on a clothesline with a bat to clean it instead of using a vacuum. This activity was interesting and so much fun! I’m really glad I wasn’t the 9 year old servant girl who was given the worst jobs to do, like empty the chamber pots every morning before dawn!
Old Fashion Games:
The second activity was old fashion games. There were a variety of different games to play. One of the games was croquet. In croquet you have a ball and a mullet. You have to get the ball through four different hoops and then hit the pole in the middle. Another game was hot potato. In hot potato you have a small bean bag and you throw it to people until the person in the middle says hot and then the person who is holding the bean bag is out. You keep going until there is only one person left and that person is the winner.
Mansion Tour:
After the old fashion games we looked at an almost 200 year old mansion. There were like 20 rooms, some rooms the kids couldn't even go into, they were just for the adults. There were special rooms just for the kids.
The entrance had a real gold wall just to show people how rich they were. The dining room was HUGE. The dining table could fit sixteen people around it. It was used for dinner parties and afterwards the servants had to clean every plate.
The nanny practically raised the children and she got her own room! The parents had a room that could basically be the size of a house. There were also special stairs for the servants to take them downstairs to their quarters. These were never used by the family.
Scavenger Hunt:
Our last activity was the scavenger hunt. It was so much fun. The workers gave us a sheet of paper and a pencil and crayon. How it worked is there were 12 wooden posts around the Estate. What you had to do is find those wooden posts. When you did you would open it to see what animal was inside. Then, you would put the paper on the animal and colour it in with the crayon. Then you see what letter was on it. You add it to your piece of paper to find what the magic word was. In the end we found out the answer. We had to find out what the name of The Sargoods 2 dogs was. The answer was Mimi and Mandy.
The grounds were so beautiful. There was a lake with a boatshed, a waterfall and a tower to climb up and lots of Autumn leaves to throw in the air!! Imagine playing ‘hide and seek’ here, you would never be found!!
Conclusion:
In the end, the excursion was so much fun and we all learnt a lot. We all can’t wait to learn even more about the olden days.
