FEAST OF MARY MACKILLOP
Tuesday the 8th of August is the feast day of Australia’s only saint. I had the privilege of being in Rome when Mary of the Cross MacKillop was canonised. I also had the joy of working with many Josephite nuns in my time in education, especially during my time in Gippsland. The messages of Mary MacKillop have as much relevance today as they had during her life. Mass is being held at St Catherine’s at 7:00pm. I will be attending this Mass so if you are there please come and say hello.
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
Our Year Three to Year Six students will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption by attending 10:00am Mass at St Peter’s on Tuesday, 15th August. Families are invited to join us. The Foundation to Year Two students will celebrate with prayer in their classrooms on the 15th of August.
PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
PUPIL FREE DAY - STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Last Tuesday was the first of the two Pupil Free days this term. The day was spent with all staff as we focussed on three main areas. Kerry McKee, our Literacy leader led us in reviewing the development of our school approach to the teaching of reading. We were able to identify our successes and the areas for further development. Cathy Epstein our Numeracy leader, undertook a similar approach in reviewing our teaching of problem solving and the following of the scope and sequence we developed last year.
I led the final session where we reviewed the impact of our team approach to planning in each year level. I also introduced the research of Professor John Hattie on the impact of collective teacher efficacy. Collective teacher efficacy refers to the collective belief of teachers, at St Peter’s this means all staff, have the expertise to be able to positively impact students’ learning. John identifies collective teacher efficacy as having an extraordinary impact on student achievement. With an effect size of 1.57, collective teacher efficacy has twice the impact of feedback and three times the impact of classroom management.
Over the next months we will continue to explore how we can further develop this and the work of effective teams at St Peter’s.
Our next Pupil Free day will be on Friday, 8th September where we will focus on the teaching of religious education including a session with Fr Elio Capra.

Your pre-loved books will now be boxed up and sent to various under-resourced schools and kindergartens in Fiji, where they will bring joy and inspire a love of reading.
A special thank you to the Camfield Family for picking up the books from school and delivering them to the collection point.

MATHS GAME DAY AT COATESVILLE PRIMARY SCHOOL
Mad 4 Maths Games Day
On Friday, July 21st 8 talented Mathematicians from Year 4, 5 and 6 participated in a Mathematics Games Day at Coatesville Primary School.
The day began in a delicious way with a Guess the number of lollies challenge. Unfortunately we did not win this but we came very close.
This was followed by a Problem solving session where students participated in teams of 4. In the space of an hour the team solved around 25 thought provoking investigations!
After a snack break it was time for some quick Brain Teasers.
Next up was manipulation Tangrams to create pictures.
We then independently participated in 3 strategy games:
- 24
- Dao
- Honeycomb
Finally we finished with a ‘Guess the Number' by listening carefully to the clues. Amazingly Jack Cannington was able to beat 20 other students to win this! Way to go Jack!
Although we did not win, Jack, Baxter, Paige, Shania, Woun-Hao, Geneva, Oscar and Anushree did an amazing job! Well done Team.
On Wednesday, 26th of July the Year 2s had a Healthy Breakfast to conclude their Healthy Eating Unit.
There were eggs on toast, yoghurt with fruit inside, avocado on toast, cereal and porridge. The children of parents who came to help cook got to have their breakfast first. Some people forgot that they had to wait until everyone had been served before they could have seconds.
All the food was so delicious we all wanted to have more and more. When we were finished we said thank you and goodbye to our parent helpers. It was the best breakfast everyone had ever had!

YEAR 3 EXCURSION TO TWISTED SCIENCE
Van De Graaff Generator
On our excursion we learnt about static electricity.
I was lucky enough to get called out to put my hand on the Van de Graaff Generator. The static electricity went through my hand to my hair. My fine hair was sticking up like crazy. It felt a bit weird but I was OK. My hair was sticking up because of the positive charge. The hair did not want to stay together. It wanted to separate because the static electricity was making the hairs repel each other. I’ve got a great video showing what happened!
Zayne 3GG
On Wednesday, the Year 3 students went to TwistEd Science for an excursion where we learnt about forces and participated in experiments.
We participated in the Push Me Pull Me workshop where we learnt about gravity and other forces. My favourite station on the floor was the airplanes because I enjoy making planes.
Something new I tried was being in an upside down room. It was also fun when I played with the bubbles at the bubble station.
My favourite part of the day was visiting TwistEd Science because we got to learn more about science and forces.
Last Thursday, the Year Sixes had the amazing experience of meeting one of Australia's most famous writers, Morris Gleitzman.
It was a very informative journey since our class novels at the moment are written by him. We found out all about the creative journey he had while writing his books and discovered lots about his life as a child and how he developed his love for books. His books are mainly based on the lives of children impacted by the wars. He told us about his best selling book, 'Once' and how he went on to write six other books in the series.

THE BOAT CLUB
My name is Denver Tanti and I’m in Year Five. I would like to talk about the one and only St Peter’s Boat Club. The Boat Club has in its possession the renowned and first boat, 'The Pink Chicken', and now we are back at it doing what we do best, assembling a group of students to paint and restore yet another boat.
Boat Club takes place every Wednesday at lunchtime, near the bike shed, in the Old Adventure Playground. St Peter's likes to get everyone involved and keep everyone active, and it is also just a fun activity for anyone who wants to join it! I’m a big fan of the boats. I have been participating in this club as much as possible, and I’m loving it. I think that you should give this club a try, so you can be a part of something big.
This second boat has the names of all the students who have participated on it. It is a very colourful boat so far with a blue base, lots of decorations on it and a white top we are yet to paint. This boat does not have a name yet. Do you have any name ideas? We would love to hear them!
I hope that you will give this club a try. Come and help us out. Everyone is welcome!!
